Do you cook and bake with your diamond rings on?

With my "real" (ie upgrade set), the most I have ever done is some light dishwashing. With my everday stuff, 2 eternity bands + plain WB I will cook, clean, whatever, but never handle messy stuff that would be difficult to clean like batter, hamburger, that sort of thing.

Not at all at home/swimming. Too many abrasives, good way to keep rings looking new.
I like PD and her rings, can't stand what she does to them

I wear mine when I''m cooking, but like many people, if I know I''m going to be in a position to get my hands messy or damage my ring (housework, baking, gardening) i put it back in it''s little box where I know it''s safe and sound.

Squawk! Never!

Then again, my rings come off the minute I hit the house, LOL.

me too! as soon as I get home, my rings are off and put to bed

+1 My rings (and the rest of my jewelry) are put to bed as soon as I get home. I can''t stand doing anything messy or rough (cooking, cleaning, gardening, lifting weights) with my rings on my fingers. Plus, my 9-month-old DD loves to grab at the sparklies! Anyone else would be in big trouble for putting fingerprints on the table of my diamond.

It makes me cringe when I see Paula or Rachel Ray put their rings into gooey food.

Kay...LOL I thought I was the only one that felt like that about fingerprints on the diamonds. My dh gets a look when he smudges my diamond..but only my 8mo old son can touch my diamond...he loves looking and touching it...he puts slobber all over it. I can''t get mad at that

oh gosh, i also cringe when i see paula deen digging into meat or other gooey ingredients with her big rings...

when i am home, i take my rings off to do any kitchen stuff or cleaning

I take my rings off before I cook or clean. I am far to obsessive about clean diamonds to every wear them when doing anything that could get them dirty!

Being involved in looking after other people''s jewellery has enlightened me to the fact that MOST people, excepting this forum''s members, don''t remove their rings for anything, anytime.
Some of the accumulation of detritus can be so stubborn to remove with both powerful hot ultrasonic and steam that it becomes necessary to "cremate" the billions of organisms that are clinging to the diamonds for dear life. You would not believe the volumes of smoke which this procedure produces, and a tiny whiff of these fumes before the exhaust equipment sucks them away will produce nausea.

I know these people clean their cars, their kitchens and bathrooms, launder their clothes, and dust every nook and cranny in their living rooms, but...their rings contain a bacterial culture that Al Queda could use to do us all in.

I have seen women pop those fingers, ring and all, into their mouths to wet them so that they can get the rings off for a long-overdue service. I''m not prone to fainting but the though of it

I take mine off pretty much as soon as I walk in the house and if they''re not off already, I take them off before I do anything in the kitchen.

I saw an episode of PD a few months ago (I can only stand to listen to her for so long) and she took off her rings right before she stuck her hands in a vat of something. She said she had A LOT of people writing in to complain about how she treated her jewelry. Maybe there''s hope yet.

I used to wear it no matter how messy the job... but after having prong issues twice, I take it off for almost every little thing. It helped that I got my wedding band around the same time... and that I do wear no matter how messy the job.

oh really? That''s good that she''s listening to her fans!

she didn''t actually IMMERSE her hands in stuff...did she?? gees louise....

i have a plain platinum band i wear with one tiny flush set diamond in it. sometimes i accidentally forget i''m wearing it and put on hand cream and gum up the tiny little 3pt diamond and that REPULSES me! ground beef would absolutely disgust me. and apart from anything else - what about all those rings with tiny pave? can''t you just imagine losing diamonds in the hamburger mix and your guests chowing down on part of your wedding ring set!

this is not a good mental picture...

I tend to take my rings off when baking/dishwashing, often because I can't be stuffed cleaning them afterwards

The other reason I take them off when preparing food is for hygeine. The area of skin covered by rings is a nice little breeding ground for bacteria, due to the skin's temperature, and the moisture that is caused by sweat, if the skin is covered by something like a ring or watch. And that can end up being introduced into the food being handled, ick. When I wash my hands I always move my rings along my finger to clean underneath my rings, but it's just as easy to take them off! Here comes lazy bones again

I work in an operating theatre suite where we wear no hand or wrist jewellery, so the infection control side of jewellery-wearing was drilled into me pretty early in the piece

I do cook with my rings on, but usually I don''t get my hands dirty. I might cut up some veggies and chicken, but I''m not getting anything near my ring when I do that so I leave it on. If I''m making something with ground beef or kneading bread or something, I absolutely take my ring off.

HI:

No because they harbour lots of bacteria.....

PD also licks her fingers and put them back into her food/prep without washing them...

oh my.. absolutely not! I don''t even wear my rings at home. Rings and dough do not mix.

No rings yet - X fingers crossed for the next month or so X. But when I do get them, no, I won''t cook with them on. I really don''t like having sticky/gooey stuff on my hands let alone my rings.

oh yes she immerses her entire hand into the batter or whatever she''s mixing. Those poor HUMONGOUS stones are just covered with all gooey batter. ACK..lol

as for someone swallowing one of my ACA stones...I would scream STOP DON''T SWALLOW..SPIT IT OUT CAREFULLY

LOL! My husband and I were at a high-end jewelry store in KC, and while we were browsing, the salesperson offered to clean my rings and his watch. It took rather a while, not because my rings were dirty (perish the though! I am one of the keep-em-as-clean-as-humanly-possible-without-my-own-jewelry-store school of thought), but because his watch was..um...not so clean? (He sails and works on cars a bunch, need I say more?) Anyway, when they came back with his watch, he quipped, "Wow. You got the potatoes out..."
I thought the salesguy was going to fall over laughing. He''d never heard it put like that, but apparently the hubs had it pretty close. Like you, the salesguy told of some women who come in with such filthy rings that they''ve actually say, "That''s not my jewelry!" when they were returned all cleaned up. :)

Oh, btw, I popped over to your site. Nice work! I found your incorporation of wood into some of your pieces very original. :)

I always take rings off when cooking for food hygiene reasons.

I haven''t always been careful with my jewellery in other ways though. I wear a 0.10 ct diamond ring I got for my 18th 4 years ago-no one ever told me to be careful with it, or that it would need replating, so it looks a complete mess now. I really need to get it sorted, but stopping doing the dishes with it on is a start!

I just received a wedding set for my 25th and am really obsessive about it, I take it off if I''m going to be doing something even slightly messy! Actually, I''ve always been like that, I can''t see getting a pretty ring coated with anything that will be tough to get off. Don''t know how Paula can do that!

Junebug...glad to see I''m not the only one that''s a little protective over the rings

Great minds think alike!!!

And I get crazy about fingerprints on the stone, too! I''m always buffing mine with my shirt...I know, I''m crazy, but I just think a diamond at it''s cleanest looks so pretty.

I do the same thing. If my husband touches my stone

or anyone, I immediately wipe it off with my shirt..it''s nuts but it''s me

yes I just saw this for the first time a few days ago during an episode where they made pie and I was shocked she did this (then gave her friend a piece to try after licking her finger and using that same finger to plop whipped cream on something)
