Do you break that supermarket protocol?

I must confess; I do.
I reach to the back of the shelf to get the freshest milk, bread, yogurt, eggs, meat etc.
I even check the dates.

I try to do it when nobody, especially an employee, is looking.

I realize this is selfish as it leaves the more stale product for others.

Do you do this, or do you just grab the one that is closest?

I just grab what is there. I check dates though. I find with milk that it is only a few days difference anyways.

Then again I don't usually do the grocery shopping. My husband usually does it and I am pretty sure that he is just a grabber too.



I thought you were going to ask if you get in the 10 items or less lane with more than 10 items. In that case I would have answered absolutely NO. That is a rule you NEVER break.

As a daughter of a grocer, there is no way I can''t do this.

I know it''s probably not kosher, but I don''t hide it either. I know all the tricks grocers do sell stuff. I used to have to do it.

IMHO, it''s stupid NOT to do this. Why would you pick crappy fruit if there is good fruit sitting right there? You''re paying the same price, might as well get what is fresh.

That being said, I don''t make a mess of shelves or anything. I do a quick check to see if there is anything fresher than what''s in front and grab what is easily reachable.

I usually don''t, but I do with milk. My husband is paranoid to the extreme about keeping milk past it''s end date, so I try to get the one that will keep the longest.

I do... Milk, juice, eggs, bread, cheese, etc. Anything with a date on it, I WILL look for the furthest date of expiration or closest date of freshness.

ETA: I just noticed last week, that the skim milk at my local grocery store has a much closer "sell-by" date than it used to. They used to be like 2-2.5 weeks away, and now they are barely over 1 week away. The 2% was like 4 days from the day I was shopping!

I do know that it doesn't have to be used by that date, but I usually only keep it in the fridge for a week, at most, past that date. That and DH refuses to drink anything past the "sell-by" the date on the carton. So after that date, it's just me.

Why should I settle on older or lower quality items just because they are in front. I won''t make a mess, but I will get the best I can.

D&T, I''ve stood inside the fridge before, using my other hand to grab that second or third shelf to balance myself!!

Me too! My mom always did (and does) so when I started grocery shopping, I made sure to check dates as well. Not as much now, since BF and I have gotten into the habit of shopping for meat and stuff as we need it (we''ll usually use it that night) so I grab what''s there, but for milk yes - I don''t want it to expire before we finish it!

I''ve never considered trying to get the freshest items from the back or underneath to be breaking any sort of protocol. In fact, I''ve been known to stand on the bottom shelf to reach the prettier tissue boxes at the back of the two top shelves.

Oh, and when I first read the title of the thread, I thought it was going to be about lining up with 20+ items in the express lane. Just for the record, that''s one I never do.

Of course. Not only do I grab the freshest, but always grab the packet of meat that's at the bottom most part of the meat racks because those packages are coldest.

I have two kids and spend a fortune on food. It's in my best interest to put my money toward buying food that will be healthiest for my kids.

ETA - not everyone cares about fresh food. there is a reduced section *for meat* at one grocery store by me. some customers PRIDE themselves on purchasing meat from there. One woman tried to guide me over there. . .the meat was GREEN.

i don''t even bother reaching to the back, i just start looking at all the dates and then choose the one farthest out. of course i put it all back and i could care less who is watching. esp for things like ''heavy cream'' where we only use it sparingly so it needs to last a month or more. some stores heavy cream is only like 1-2 weeks out...whereas other places might have it be 4-5 weeks!

some stores like TJ''s you have to be REALLY careful with dates, most of their ''fresh'' stuff has sell-by dates that are like a DAY from whenever you shop. i hate it actually. its gotten to the point that i hardly buy my perishables there because it''s not worth it having to toss it a week later when at another store i can pay 50 cents more and actually keep it 2 weeks after that.
