Do you break that supermarket protocol?

I thought that everyone did this. I never hide the fact I am looking for the freshest food. Just seems like smart shopping to me.
Same here.

Kenny, are you sure you''re not making this ''protocol'' up? Seems you''re being a bit more paranoid about it than is warranted

Same here, as well. Why would you buy something that''ll be stale before you get it home if you don''t have to?

I''ve never heard of someone looking for the.. unfreshest stuff. I always grab the fresh stuff. If worst comes to worst, the the store write it off. Not my fault :)

Well I wasn't exactly taught this in finishing school.

The store either sells food or throws it away because it got old.
The more food they throw away the more all stores must charge for what does sell.
If they just put the new stuff in the front the old stuff in the back would never sell.
It is someone's job to rotate the stock to minimize waste.

I'm astonished that everyone here reaches to the back.
Maybe we just like to hold our diamonds out in front of our eyes for as long as possible. Haha.
I'm sure a large percentage of the public does not do that.
(Now I'm going to watch others when I shop.)

Believe it or not I AM a nice person.
I feel something when I mess up their perfect display digging back in the nice and tightly-faced dairy shelves.
I have defeated the purpose of that employee and the mission of the store.
Plus I can imagine the next customer behind me thinking "Oh fresh milk for you, stale milk for me; thanks a lot Buddy!"

Clearly I don't feel TOO bad since I admit doing it.
I'm just surprised that everyone here (who sometimes strike me as overly nice) does it.
Nobody has expressed any hesitation about it.

depends on what it is - canned goods I don''t worry so much about... milk I even fluctuate between 1% and 2% to get THE freshest organic milk. I''m slightly less (and yet attentively) picky about bread. Most other things not so much. Oh - except cottage cheese lol Basically - dairy. MUST.BE.FRESH.

I''m with TG = I don''t hide it either. If other people don''t care - they can have the stuff in the front lol

I stop drinking milk a good week or week and a half BEFORE the date. I am super picky. I can''t think of anything else I am as picky about as cottage cheese and milk lol - when they''re good they''re my favorite things to drink/eat and when they are not they are the WORST NASTIEST stuff ever.

Me too. I never realized there was a "protocol" against searching for the freshest product possible. Even if the dates are the same, I don''t want the product from the front row because it has been exposed to more warm air.

If a store is really having this problem, then it can be easily remedied by the management. If they have products getting old on the shelves before they can sell them, then they''re ordering too much of that product. If it''s not a matter of too much of the product, then they should wait until the older stuff sells from off the shelf and then refill with the newer product - problem solved! Rather than rotate stock, the employee can just refill the stock once it''s sold out.

By messing up the perfect display, you are not defeating the purpose of the employee in fact you are giving him job security! If everyone were extremely neat and kept the shelves in perfect rows, why would the store need to employ someone to go around and fix the displays and shelves.

It''s bizarre to me that you would think that someone, who showed up to the store on the same day and paid the same amount for a gallon of milk, should drink stale milk so as to make sure that a stranger gets fresh milk.

Stores like to keep shelves looking full.

Imagine a store in which only one or two of each item was on the shelf, with a team of employees standing by to put one more item on the shelf when the last one sells?

Did I say people should drink stale milk?

You are twisting my words.

Internet threads are weird.

Wow, okay. Nice talking to you, I guess...

Indeed.

*Breaking News Alert*

The management of the Piggly Wiggly chain of grocery stores have armed their employees with Tazer Guns. They claim this has become necessary to stop consumers from reaching to the back of store shelves for the freshest products.

The first casualty has been reported. Vancity was found in the dairy aisle, clutching a carton of chocolate milk to her bosom - with an expiry date of Oct. 2020

Thanks Kal.
You Rock!

I like that he laughed so hard.
I love these kinds of every-day yet unnoticed things.

Some day I''m going to write a book chock full of these kinds of things and call it something like, ''Things That Don''t Matter''.
It will be perfect Toilet Literature.

So at the store you are the famous ''Diamond Girl''?
Do they have good bling light?
Definitely!

And I reach to the back too.
9.gif
And open drawers for things that haven''t been mauled etc.

Again I'm not giving advice or telling anyone what to do.
I'm just observing.
They put fresh stuff in the back but we reach for it anyway.
It's like a game we play.

Two parties have differing interests.
The store wants to sell stuff (not throw it away), and we want the freshest food.
It's kind of amusing.

This might make an good premiss for a comedy skit.

I break protocol with most things in life, grocery shopping being one of them. In my opinion I'm reinforcing the stock boy's job security by messing up the shelves. Someone has to fix it.

Bottom line, it's foolish to just grab what's in front of your face. Groceries are expensive and should last you as long as possible (until they go bad or are consumed).

Things I DEFINITELY grab from the back are:
Meat;
Eggs;
Dairy;
Bread; and
Bagged lettuce (this I inspect VERY carefully, I refuse to eat brown, wilted or slimy lettuce).
