Do vendors share similar inventory lists?

For convenience purposes, we would like to work with NYC vendors only, since we can view the
diamonds in person. I recently called up one PS vendor and inquired about the process of making
appointments to see the diamonds in person, and they said it is best not to work with multiple
vendors at the same time because it means that they have less diamonds to show me, while presumably, other vendors are "holding" the stones for me to view. FWIW, the diamond we are thinking about is a 4.5 to 5 carat RB.

My question is, is the above true? Would it be a case where each vendor only has 1 diamond to show me because the other vendor is holding onto another stone with the specs I am looking for?
As a consumer, what would be my best option? I always thought working with a few vendors would be ideal in deciding who to go with eventually (mixture of price point+customer service).

For sub say 3ct that's definitely true - but that's in large part because there *are* so many stones to choose from! Large, non-branded, well-cut RBs aren't a dime a dozen like smaller stones so I could see why working with one vendor could be easier.

So I guess you'd really be shopping for a vendor that you can trust to find you a nice stone at a fair price..

Yes, largely this is true. It is, of course, entirely possible that there are other customers out there who are looking for the same general specs as you so the stone(s) may be unavailable to your dealer for reasons that have nothing to do with you. I absolutely agree with the idea that you should choose your dealer first and the diamond second rather than the reverse.

Thanks!
