Do the side stones overwhelm the center stone?

My husband proposed with this 1.23 carat, VVS2, G color, round brilliant, excellent cut with a GIA certificate from Jared almost 5 years ago. Neither of us knew much about jewelry at the time, so I happily picked out a setting at Jared 1 day later to keep the insurance/service plan. I had some issues with the mounting being crooked. This was finally fixed last week (!), but I still am not 100% happy with the setting I picked out. My husband said he'd be okay with me resetting the ring using the same diamonds, but I'm not 100% sure what I want because I want this to be a one-time thing.

Here are my thoughts:

The ring has .86 carats of side stones. I like the channel set princess cut stones but think the two rounds on either side look goofy. In the bright lights of the store it looked like 2 baguettes instead of 4 rounds.

I almost want to set it in a Jabel white gold solitaire because that's what my grandma had, the white gold alloy they use is beautiful, and a solitaire would be a classic choice that I could change with different bands. Then I could give the 8 princess cut and 4 round brilliant stones to my husband and ask for them back as blingy bands for future anniversaries.

That being said, my husband really likes the bling factor. I think for me, the center stone by itself would show more fire and pop more as being a great diamond, but would he or I miss the little sparkles if the side stones? Would it look better as a solitaire with channel set princess stones on the band and only one round on each side? Would the rounds I have (about 10 points each) be too small?

Thanks so much for taking the time to help me with this. Hubby just wants me to be happy, and I want to make sure I know what I want when we get around to doing this. Also - if we have the ring insured, does having the extended warranty or "diamond bond" insurance through Jared matter? They won't let me keep this if I reset through them, none of their settings seemed to be what I was looking for, and I don't really want to be tied to them for repairs because the quality so far has not been spectacular.

I think if you put 10 pointers on the side of a stone that size the proportions would not look exactly right.

I just would get a solitaire with channel set princesses like you really like, and i would probably not incorporate the 10 pointers. Im pretty certain it would cost more money to have someone remove your stones and create a custom setting with them.

I would go with a solitaire. That way your beautiful diamond is the center of attention.

Ditto, return that setting and start over. If you prefer a solitaire, you can always get a diamond wedding band to add a little extra sparkle! I don't see anything wrong with the setting you have, but take this opportunity to change it to what you really want. And no, those store warranties are worthless. You need to insure the whole ring for loss, theft, damage, etc. Rarely is there a need to use a store warranty on a ring.

It will likely cost more to reuse those stones and have a custom band made than it would cost to buy a new band that is already made. So I'd return that setting.

You could go with a solitaire and have the 10 pointers made into a necklace, etc if he still wants yuou to have all the same stones.

I would just start over and do a solitaire with a more delicate (thinner) band to make your diamond stand out. :))

Wow everybody! Thanks for your ideas. I like the idea of a solitaire with a thinner band and using the side stones for a necklace later. Later this week I'm going to look at settings and will keep you updated :-)

Do you think a solitaire without any stones in the band would be more timeless than with stones in the band? Are the ladies with a setting like this happy with it?

To me the most timeless setting is a classify Tiffany six prong.

I do think the solitaire is the most classic and is also the most versatile. I myself am switching out my solitaire for a fishtail prong solitaire setting. But I have an Old european cut, so for my stone I think the vintage stone deserves a vintage setting. But for a round brilliant I would go with a Tiffany style solitaire. You really cant go wrong with a solitaire. It will also make your stone look bigger I think with the thin band. Good luck and post pictures.

Your stone will look awesome with fishtail prongs, Sandeek :-)

Thank you Mishy. And I think you will love a solitaire. Your stone (which is a good size) will be the star and that's how I like it. But that's just me.
Jmarshall, your ring is beautiful.
