Do stones look bigger in a setting?

I have been looking at .5 loose stones to be the sidestones of a three stone ring. I also tried on a three stone semi-mount that had .5 side stones. The stones on the semi-mount look much larger than the loose .5 stones. Does the setting and prongs makes the stones look larger?

Yes. Setting a stone makes it look larger.
