I have been going to the same local jewelry store(not a chain) for years and the same sales associate has helped me with my purchases each time. Today she was busy with another customer so another SA helped me and I ended up purchasing something. So it made me wonder if they work on commission. If so should I have waited for her to finish with the other customers and then had her help me? I am feeling bad because she has always been a good SA to me and I hope I didn''t give someone else what maybe should have been her earnings.

It depends on the store''s compensation structure. It''s likely that they incorporate some sort of commission scale in their total compensation package.

I wouldn''t feel too badly at all. That''s just the way the cookie crumbles, right? If the other sales agent helped you then she deserves the commission, if there is one, and it''s certain that your regular sales agent will understand. Next time, if you are worried about it and uncertain, waiting for her to finish sounds like a very considerate act of appreciation on your behalf.

ditto this...
I worked for a department store in the fine jewelry dept and yes there was commission involved on top of my reg, salary, some stores I've heard says no, but I still wonder though... even when I worked at a department store, and I didn't earn commssion but still had sales quota to meet... go figured, however, I always appreciated when a regular customer waited for me, but, I totally understand if I was busy and someone else helped them,
