When I buy jewelry online, most of the online retailers provide "lifetime upgrade" which means you can trade-in your old one and get a new one by paying the difference. Ok, then this is my concern: How do they deal with the trade-in ones? I am afraid they will just sell them without marking them as "used".

I know diamond is durable and you cannot tell the difference even after decades. However, recently I am going to buy a diamond necklace for my fiancee. Will the necklace be a used one? I think my fiancee will feel uncomfortable if she wears a used necklace.

Re: Do online jewelers sell used but not mark them as "used"

Diamonds are re-cut and re-graded. And yes, they are sold as new. Finished jewelry is different.

If you don't want a diamond that has been possibly used before you are going to have to work with a vendor like Infinity that can tell you the history of each of their diamonds.

But really... why does it matter?

My wedding band was pre-loved. It's still mine. It's not tainted or anything. I don't care why the person who originally bought it sold it. It's irrelevant.

If you and your fiancé felt this way the only way you could buy is to tell a dealer you only want freshly cut/polished stones, which 1) will severely, and I mean SEVERELY limit your options, 2) give him a headache unless he works directly with a cutting house, and 3) be more expensive as newer stones receive the newer market price.

Good luck.

I do not care if the diamond is used or not. What I care is about the whole necklace (diamonds on a 14k gold). 14k gold is not as durable as diamond.......

Good Old Gold also custom cuts diamonds so that you'll know they are newly cut and never sold before. Their August Vintage Rounds and Cushions and Octavias would fall into that category. As far as round brilliants and most diamonds in the virtual lists go, yes, they may have been traded in or sold and resold. They are not recut unless they are damaged. But old diamonds are often recut to help them sell better. So you can be buying a stone that has been worn before. But as long as it has been regraded to show it's current condition, I am not sure why it really would matter. You'll never know. :))

But as far as jewelry pieces go, those are almost never eligible for trade in, and if they are sold to a jeweler, they are sold as estate or vintage which lets you know they are used.

Re: Do online jewelers sell used but not mark them as "used"

Finished pieces are rarely if ever sold as new when they are used. They are and should be listed as pre-owned.

And even 14kt gold is very durable. All you have to do to make sure there is no issue is get a GOOD INDEPENDENT (this is key) appraisal.

What are you looking for/looking to buy.

Re: Do online jewelers sell used but not mark them as "used"

I just reread the initial post, too, and I will add to my reply to be more clear. If you buy a necklace that is represented as new, then it will be new. As I said before, previously worn jewelry like bracelets, necklaces, rings, or earrings are resold as estate or vintage to indicate that they are used. Preowned jewelry is almost never eligible for trade-in. If it is, then the jeweler has to sell it as used. It is different with loose diamonds, and that has already been explained.

I am looking for a diamond tennis necklace around $4000. ID jewelry gives me a very good deal for a 5ctw one, however, this one just comes with a store appraisal

Also, we went to a local zales store, and they also have one around 3ctw.

I know the one from zales has a less carat and maybe poor diamond quality. However, from the picture, it looks larger than the one from ID. I think it is because for zales one, the diamond does not go all the way around the necklace (the ID one does), which makes the front diamonds larger.

Which one do you suggest (most likely I think you will chose ID). And do you know what is called for the zales one (basically a "so-called" tennis necklace with bigger diamonds in the front and only gold in the back.)

Re: Do online jewelers sell used but not mark them as "used"

I would not buy diamond jewelery from Zales.

What was the quality of the stones on the IDJ.

Re: Do online jewelers sell used but not mark them as "used"

That's a better choice. Make sure Yekutiel at IDJ gives you "Pricescope quality" stones.

Re: Do online jewelers sell used but not mark them as "used"

Is this for a surprise or did she tell you wants this specific style? Because I would rather have either a diamond solitaire pendant or a diamonds-by-the-yard necklace 1000 times more than the one you just linked. I would absolutely go with IDJ over Zales. Specify that you found them on PS and tell them you want excellent cut, eyeclean diamonds.

Re: Do online jewelers sell used but not mark them as "used"

Nobody throws away a diamond after a divorce or death.
Some may vanish into safe deposit boxes for generations, but often they are sold.
People who buy them don't throw them away either just because they didn't come directly from a mine.
A "new" billion-year-old diamond looks just like a "used" billion-year-old diamond.
If buyers can't tell it is naive to expect sellers to throw away lots money revealing a diamond didn't come directly from a mine.

IIRC, with every diamond I have bought I asked about its provenance.
In every case the vendor said, basically, "I have no idea."
Clearly, don't ask don't tell is the diamond industry's standard.

Nuff said?

If that bothers you then consider this:
I hear lots of gold from dental work of Holocaust victims was melted down and has likely found its way into gold we are wearing and is for sale today.
They don't throw away tainted gold either.
The provenance of gold and diamonds is often kept hush hush at the wholesale and retail levels.
Who would want to make money vanish by revealing the truth?

Diamond is still diamond.
Gold is still gold.
It's not the material's fault what happened to it.
We all breath 'used' air and nobody has any moral compunction about that.

What can you do?
You have four choices:
1. Stop thinking. Just buy and enjoy your luxury baubles.
2. Don't buy them.
3. Buy them, but feel guilty and worry.
4. Do what PS member Dancing Fire did. Commission a diamond to be polished from rough.

That's the style she likes....

Re: Do online jewelers sell used but not mark them as "used"

You aren't going to get more than an in store appraisal for a piece like that. Take it to Martin Fuller if you want, to get it appraised in NYC.

Re: Do online jewelers sell used but not mark them as "used"

With a good polish or rhodium plating, old jewelry can look brand spanking new!
