Note: there is a correct answer. This is kinda like asking if my arse looks big in this.

Today I went to the local jewellery store (non-mall, small chain of three stores, and the guy has a bench although I'm not entirely sure how much of the work he does himself) to ask if something was possible with my new-ish stud earrings. They are .67 tcw and about 4.3-4.4mm for each stone. So jewellery guy and I are talking and I explain what I want, not very well, but he keeps asking questions and finally gets it (I should have asked for paper and pencil to draw, but now I know for next time).

I want drops to attach to my studs to I can slide them on or keep them off. Jewellery guy says, yes, it's possible, your studs are what, about .10 each. I always have something to say. I was speechless. After 3.2 seconds I recover, actually they are about .33 each. I mentally get over it and move on to talk about sizes for what I'm talking about, if it's possible, and turn around time. But I don't forget
2.gif
So...

Do my studs just look small on me? I'm 5 ft 3 (4 on a good day but today was not such a good day). I thought they looked a good size on me. I thought maybe I'll move up to 1-1.50 ctw in a few years. Maybe. But I'm rocking the .67 tcw. I guess I'm not as hot as I thought I was, jeweller guy thought they were .2 tcw. Do I need to upgrade sooner than I thought?

Oh dear :)

Your jeweller needs his head looking at - they don''t look like 0.10ct each to me... and no, you don''t have big ears!

Your earrings look really pretty on you. :)

Relax!

I have, I''ve decided, big ears. I wear .63 (1.26ctw) in my bottom holes and .52(1.04 ctw) in my top holes and I swear they look the same size as yours do on mine. Ugh. And I''m only 5''2!!

I''m thinking that maybe it was the jeweler that was having a bad day. Either that, or he''s just a plain idiot
11.gif

The earrings look quite lovely on you!

I agree, they do NOT look like .10 LOL You have nothing to worry about. Never go back to this guy again even if he''s the only jeweler in the 250 mile radius!

They do not look like .10 IMO.

That said, and it''s probably an effect of the macro, they do look smaller than quarter carat stones in the pic? I imagine they look just fine in real life.

They look beautiful on you. My daughter has the same size earrings as you do and they look the same on you, as they do her.

Enjoy them and don''t go back to that dingy jeweler.

Agreed! Please ignore that comment!

Any jeweler who can''t really tell between a .30ish and .10ish diamond is NOT worth his salt, imo
14.gif
. I mean, c''mon on!

There is nothing like a jeweler making you feel like crap
29.gif
Your earrings look great and nevermind what some dork has to say. If he is such a great jeweler, shouldn''t he know what a .10 round looks like? HMMMMM? Maybe he was just trying to sell you larger studs for a pretty profit
27.gif

no, they look just as they should on your ears! (beatiful, and the size they are)

i think your jeweler is full of you-know-what. he probably thinks himself quite clever.... for planting a seed of discontent that he hopes will lead to you upgrading to larger diamonds (from him, of course).

They look great on your ears and certainly are not .10 ct.

No, they do not look small on you...and certainly NOT .10! I think they are a lovely size on your ears.

I so totally agree.
What a nit-wit. Apparently he wasn't looking very closely. What a putz. They're lovely.
I agree too - what a berk!

*giggle*snort*

Pfft, .10ct?? That ridiculous. The spoonhead that told you that clearly has no idea. They look sensational!

I don''t think your studs look small!

There''s an easy way to resolve this size question in an approximate sense:

Get a pair of calipers that measure in millimeters, and measure your earring stones. Then, compare it to an average round-diamond mm diameter/carat size chart like this one:

http://www.jewelrydays.com/product_info.php?cPath=134_136&products_id=1622

Voila! You''ll have an approximate idea of your stones'' carat weight. And you can see what the smaller size stones look at - I think the .67 carat weight total sounds about right, personally.

Jeweler guy is a moron! They look great!

Dear Lady,

I have clients that would Kill for wonderful well proportioned lobes like those! Could you wear a bigger stud? Yes. Could you wear a smaller stud? Yes.

With those lovely ears you can wear just about anything you want.

Go for it!

Wink

P.S. You might want to go for a new jeweler too.

Thanks guys!! I''ve been really really happy with them until yesterday. It just kinda caught me off guard that the jeweller guy thought they were much smaller than they were. I have a pair of .20 ctw and they look totally different in size to me. I feel better already! You are all awesome.

Wink, just the guy I need to email, actually...since you did these settings to begin with and all. I guess this was my punishment for not asking you my questions, huh?

I have to ask...what''s a berk? Is this some English word I don''t yet understand? I''ve only just now learnt the meaning of "twee" and can use it properly
16.gif
. Don''t throw too much English at me at once!

Yes, berk is an English expression which I have used for donkey's years! "Berk" I believe comes from the dreadful duo Burke and Hare, who were 19th century grave robbers!
14.gif
I seem to remember reading the gruesome twosome were kept very busy supplying various medical schools with fresh cadavers for their anatomy classes......
32.gif

So from that, " Burkeing" was a slang term for grave robbing, in the fullness of time, as these things often do, it became modern slang " berk" which is used to describe a twit, fool, idiot etc.

Twee is a very nice word, and I hope you are enjoying using it!

no, they do not look like .10 at all. his comment is just a reflection of his lack of experience! seriously!

and if it makes you feel any better, i had a similar experience just last week. i went to the new david yurman store in hk and was wearing my 2.51ct RB ering. i was trying on some DY rings on my ring finger so removed my ering. the salesgirl and salesguy who were helping me were admiring my ering which was very flattering. but then they proceeded to ask 'wow, is this about 1 carat'. i was utterly speechless for a few seconds and just mumbled 'no, it's a little more than that' and i could tell they took that literally and seriously thought it was just a 'little' more than 1 carat. pure unadulterated lack of experience, i tell ya!

They definitely do not look like .10ct. They look much bigger. Do not listen to that jeweller.

Wink,

I love your answer!!!

Don''t you hate it when you type out a long reply and some very rude people take days and days to even acknowledge your post?!
12.gif

Thank you for explaining this to me! I''ll practice using it to DH to get it right. I always feel kinda silly using very British phrases or words. I still don''t feel British enough to say "cheers" or "ta" and have only just now gotten around to using "quid". I feel like a poser when using my new words.

Um, cheers, coughcough.

Nothing like a "Lord of the Rings" reference on a diamond forum.

Your studs are LOVELY. I think they are a fantastic size for your lobe.
The jeweler must have been smoking something/sleep deprived/confused/an alien/ who knows...
