Do jewelers talk? I mean, how is it they know what I''ve said/done with other jewelers in town?

K..this whole process is starting to piss me off! I talked to the jeweler whom I was going to drop off my diamond with yesterday. I wanted to confirm the price, and what color/grade diamonds I would be getting. I asked if he would accept $1800 firm (it was $1865 with the tax). He said to me.."your Myerson quote came back at over $3300 which would have been a recreation of a mass producted mount, the one you looked at in the jewelers showcase with the colored stone. My prices are the best quality for the best price, the cost is $1750 plus tax, firm! That does not include diamonds on the shank, just the halo"

I was shocked by the fact that he knew I had "shopped around" and new what ring and where I had seen it, without mentioning it to him. Maybe he called Myerson''s for a quote and they told him someone from this same city wanted this style ring..and inquired last week? I am also wondering why his price went up $100 since yesterday..and he also said he won''t know the actual cost of the ring until he gets my diamond, the project is initiated, and then he could tell me the clarity and color of stones used (although he *usually* uses E/F colored SI stones).
So..to my understanding that means, the project could be complete, my diamond set, and suddenly I am stuck paying a few hundred more if I want my ring (or diamond back)? Hmmmmmm..does this sound a bit strange to you??

Perhaps the jeweler is a PS'er?
LOL..It's highly unlikely! (when I asked him if he knew who Mark Morell and Leon Mege were, he didn't have a clue..what kind of PS'er would that be?? LOL) I do know that this particular store gets a bum wrap around here. I have heard some horror stories. YES, their jewelry is fabulous..they deal with some of the best designers, but there is something shady about them. Price seems to be inconsistent .( Better watch what I say in case he is a PS'er! and reading this

. I do know..that word of mouth is the best (or can be the worst) advertising for a business. I won't have anything good to say about this store or owner, when friends look to me for recommendations! I have found someone to work with..no doubts in my mind that my diamond will come back to me, in a beautiful setting!! There must have been a reason I didn't drop my diamond into the little envelope he was holding out yesterday !! I was a bit hesitant! (I still remember years ago when I had my pear shape e-ring, and thought about resetting it (I never did). This same jeweler really badmouthed it..telling me the setting had a "wow" in it..that it wasn't made very well..yadda..yadda...yadda. With my current diamond he really inspected it..had a few things to say about it, including "huh..it has an extra facet". Again, the only reason I considered dealing with him was because of the slim pickings around here..not alot of choices..and he did assure me he would take all responsiblity for my diamond, in transit, and while being set! BUT..as a few other ladies have said to me..he gives me a "bad vibe"! Guess it was meant to be that I didn't leave the diamond with him yesterday, and that only hours later..the jeweler I was hoping to work with, called me back!!

nope what happened is the same benchman is making the ring for both places and has a big mouth.
It is pretty common for a bunch of jewelers to use the same bench.
I was lucky enough to find out who that was in my area and go directly to him cutting out the middle man.

Karl is likely right.

That, and the fact that this business is a very intimate one - everybody knows everybody!

Ditto Storm and I''ve run into this sort of thing as well. At this point I really don''t even bother with B&M''s and get quote straight from the ps vendors.

Well..this I knew!! I knew the jeweler was going to contact Myerson''s along with two others for a quote. Isn''t that sortof stuff kind of confidential? I mean..I can see this particular jeweler asking (he''s snoopy) Myerson''s if they had someone inquire for the same setting lately. Around here..not many people would be looking at a setting like that. They''re more the plain cathedral type..shop from mall stores! Anyway..it''s all good. The ring goes out tomorrow..keeping fingers crossed that it comes back looking spectacular!!
