Do I need an independant appraisal from GOG?

I''m buying my stone from GOG and was wondering if most people who buy from them also get an independent appraisal done. They provide their own complete appraisal for insurance purposes, but I thought you should never go with the appraisal from the place you buy from, for obvious reasons. I fully trust GOG though and would be comfortable using theirs.

So, should I get an independent appraisal done before setting the stone or is it not necessary? Also, is the appraisal done before or after the stone is set?

I don''t think you need to personally just due to their reputation. But I would get the whole thing appraised once done for insurance purposes.

Perhaps then, you can help me with insurance and using Mark Morrell. GOG will be shipping to him for the setting, but do I need to insure the loose stone before that happens? How does this work and then do I need to get new insurance for after it''s set. While this might be common knowledge, I seem to be unclear on the process.

Shipping to MM should be covered by GOG''s insurance, I think.

The appraisal is done after the stone is set, and then you get insurance.

One thing you must check, is that the diamond is covered while being set, as I don't know if MM would take responsibility if anything happened while setting - this is rare but needs checking into. I would contact an insurance company such as -

www.jewelersmutual.com or www.chubb.com if the diamond isn't covered prior to setting, you might be able to purchase insurance for this and then go onto a normal policy afterwards for the actual ring.

I purchased the stone from GOG & just told them to ship it to him directly... didn''t have to give his address or anything; they know him. Regardless, I didn''t appraise/insure it in advance. No problems.

Once Mark is finished, it''ll go to an appraiser.

No you dont. Insurance may require it but John from GOG can prob write one up for you since he''s a GG.

Either way, most insurance policies will replace the ring with a jeweler of their choice so long as the specs match. The whole process of insurance / appraising / replacement is a bit of a dog and pony show at times but has to be done in the event something happens.

Hey Top Secret, nice pics of your MM ring! I just ordered a Sunburst myself. You mentioned that you are having yours appraised by RS. Is GOG giving you a full appraisal themselves? Are you having it done by RS just for peace of mind I assume?

I''m just wondering if I should get my ring independently appraised when it''s finished.
