Do bezel set stones ever get really cleaned with home methods?

Hi Everyone,

Before I commit to a more enclosed type of setting for my stone, I wanted to ask if those who have bezel set stones ever get their stones really, truly clean? Is it inevitable that gunk gets trapped and it would take a jeweler with a serious steam cleaner to get most of it out?

Would the metal around a stone with a more intricate basket prevent a stone from being as cleanable as say a solitaire type setting? Or do you think it is possible but that it just takes a little more time and effort? I'm talking about using home methods warm water with dishwashing liquid. I am pretty anal about keeping my ring clean. I soak in warm water with dishwashing liquid and scrub with toothbrush daily.

I'm trying to prevent serious disappointment in the case I do go for a bezel set ring and then I get regret it because I don't feel like my ring is bright and shiny simply cause it's dirty and I can't get it clean enough.

Thanks in advance for sharing any experiences.

Agree with thecat - my previous bezel halo had an enclosed gallery and I never felt like I could get the pavilion clean and it drove me insane. The bezel from the top of the stone had no affect on cleaning.

As long as there is enough space in the detailed gallery for the bristles of your toothbrush to reach it, you should be fine. I have a bezeled ring with a pattern around it and, thought it takes a bit more effort, I can get the girdle.

It sounds like your design is coming along nicely... Exciting!!!

I think the bezel around the girdle doesn't affect cleaning as much as a detailed gallery would. I suppose it is hard for the brush to reach the pavilion of the diamond when there is an intricate basket around it.

It is easy to clean this type of bezel

Yes, I do agree the underside of the stone would be easy to reach on this one. True about the gallery. I think I am just nervous. I'm not thinking of fully bezeled, but there is much more to the gallery than the one you posted. Gotta keep thinking about this...

Yeah, that is what I do not want. I just looked up a pic of your old halo and the gallery of mine would have a similar level of design as yours. You did not feel like you could get in there and clean it sufficiently with a toothbrush? It looked like there were enough holes and spaces.

Maybe the halo made it even more difficult. I don't have a halo planned. Then maybe reaching the inside won't be as challenging.

Right, as long as there are holes and spaces I think I could reach it with a toothbrush.

My oval is bezeled and the gallery is pretty intricate and I've never had a hard time cleaning it. Now, I don't ever get it horribly dirty, as I take it off to cook, clean, garden, etc. But I honestly don't think it would be an issue...

My ultrasonic has done a great job cleaning my bezel earrings (and my Invisalign) with a drop of regular shampoo, handsoap, or dish soap.

I used my jewel jet on my SS bezeled piece and it had a pretty intricate gallery.

I use a sharper image ultrasonic and it's been great. I fill it with half windex and half warm water.
It has loosened up some melee in the past but I'd rather have the loose melee floating around in my ultrasonic and knowing where they are than lost somewhere never to be found.
It fits many things at once (bracelets, earrings, watches, etc. ) and it has two settings. I usually put it on the lower setting but I run it two times.
Also, I use a baby toothbrush.
I tend to find when I wear earrings and necklaces I don't clean them as often as I do my rings.

I mentioned this earlier today on dif thread, but the house hold cleaning product called Simple Green (it comes in spray bottle) works like a champ. A very well known appraiser in Seattle told me this. He said to squirt a small amount in a cup, just enough to cover jewelry pieces and add a small amount of warm water and let them sit for an hour or while you sleep. The fluid is bringer green, if your store carries it, you will find.

Hi LLJ's mom!

I've found the best way to get inside the bezel in my e-ring, is with a soft, thin, art brush. My kids have tons, so I rummaged through their art supply box, found the tiniest one I could find, and that's what I use; it gets in all the crevices. Warm water, dawn soap, and that little brush does the trick.

I have a solitaire recently set in a bezel. I think the bezel keeps the diamond much cleaner. I felt that in a solitaire so much of the diamond was exposed and it got dirty so quickly. Now bezel set it keeps it sparkle.

Thank you @omd21 . I will try that.

LLJ, is it easy to clean the center stone with your new setting?

Like Yennyfire, I don't let my ring get dirty. I take it off in a lot of situations, including when I wash my hands or on the rare occasion I use lotion. I clean the ring at least every third or fourth time I wear it. It stays looking new and clean, just like my other rings.

Yes, very easy. The base is very big and it is easy to access the underside of the diamond. Same as before I can reach it with a toothbrush. It might be different if the base of my bezel was closed off.

some settings really need steam to get them clean.
The good news is a home steamer is not horribly expensive.
An ultrasonic is also good if you don't have intricate pave but sometimes nothing beats steam even if the home units are not as good as the professional ones.

Using distilled water will make your steamer last much longer.
Its a good idea in an ultrasonic also.

I've put a straIner over a pot of boiling water and steamed rings that way. Of course you have to sit there and watch it.

Karl,

Would you say a steamer alone could do the trick or should you use an ultrasonic too (at least occasionally)? I'm looking in to units and debating what to buy.

imho the best day to day cleaning is to swish it in a mix of hot water and dawn dish soap.
The real stuff not generic. Then blow it off with compressed air.
Swish, let soak a couple min, swish, rinse, blow dry
steam or ultrasonic for the tough stuff occasional.
The ultrasonic can be used on some colored stones where other than sapphire/ruby steam should not be used on them.
Steam is better for pave.

You really considered all elements of your ring well, including the open base for cleaning.

Funny thing is I just love a wide base for aesthetic reasons. It does make cleaning really easy. I am so anal, I clean at least once, if not twice daily.

I actually like a wide base for bigger center stone so as to reduce spinning. Your ring must be very sparkly with daily/twice daily cleaning. Does the setting have azures for the rest of the diamonds? Is it a lot to brush then? I'm curious about the amount of effort needed to keep an intricate ring sparkly and clean, and determine if it should be in my future ;))
