I searched for an answer to this question with no luck and thought all you wonderful PS''ers might be able to help me out.

Would baguettes .50ct or larger come with a GIA cert?

Thanks!

not usually

GIA, and every other lab, will happily grade whatever people pay them to grade but it’s usually only done on what is seen as t e primary stones. The problem is purely one of prices. A half carater costs $64 per stone in lab fees, usually paid at the cutting level and you have to add shipping and the various downstream markups to get that to a retail price, say $120/stone. Since a typical baguette design contains several stones, we’re raising the price by quite a bit and most folks just don’t count it as worth the money. You CAN do it if you want, as long as you get on it before things are set but I’m inclined to agree with the crowd, what do you gain for your money?

its just like buying anything--you have to be your own advocate. i bought a very nice stone (that i had heavily researched) and side stones-- sight unseen from a PS vendor some time back and had the ring made. the side stones were just junk. i was never happy with them --they were little shards. so recently i went and bought new side stones that i looked at just as carefully as i did my center stone. they are .51 each and not certed but i bought them from a reputable dealer and my eyes tell me they are good.

Thanks for your replies bgray and Neil....

I was just wondering since pear sides or oval sides would have certs why not baguettes....

Thanks for your help

pears or ovals wouldnt necessarily either--if they were part of a pair probably not if they were under a certain size--singles maybe as they could be a stand alone stone. baguettes are never stand alone

Certs for side stones are not really of high importance considering the overall cost of the total item. If one is highly concerned. a documents for each stone can be obtained from an appraiser or from GIA. It is just a matter of a few more bucks and a little extra time. Most people want to see the side stones match in color and to be similar in clarity to the center, and perhaps a bit lower in clarity is okay, too. If the two don't look like they are identical in appearance, then you can reject them because they don't match eachother. You can see that with your own eyes when you really look closely.

In the end, you can demand documentation and if you have the time and money to pay for it, it really is no problem to solve it for you.
