Disappointed about my e-ring setting (done by Juan)

Hi all,
I never post anything negative about anyone. But had to vent here about my disappointment. I had gone to my local jeweller to get my Simon G ring. Then I gave my 3 stone e-ring to clean. He said the stones are loose and I asked him to tighten it. This is the setting I got it done by Juan Manuel of VanGraff (in Mexico). And this has been atleast 3rd time I tightened the stones after I got the ring. This local jeweller told me, the prongs are way too soft and I may loose the stones sometime (atleast the sides). Also, this ring is not even complete platinum. It is way too light and I had realised it after I got the ring. But didn''t want to spoil my excitement of getting the new ring. Now, after purchasing a platinum 7 stones band from SignedPieces , there is a world of difference between this ring weight and the signed pieces. Now, we are thinking seriously about getting similar setting done by this local jeweller which is nice and heavy and true platinum

But I am disappointed b''cos I read so much praise about Juan''s work and decided to get the ring from him. But really didn''t live up to my expectations.

Just had to share it with you all.. I am even planning to email him and ask if I can return the setting and get some refund

Somehow, I'm guessing that you should send the setting back immediately? How long has it been? At this point, haven't you yourself put some wear and tear on the setting? Can you really negotiate that sort of thing now that you've had work done on the ring (even just tightening the prongs) since you had another jeweler do the work?

Please, tell me if I'm wrong, but once you have something changed about the setting... isn't it yours, for good?

Also, letting something slide like the setting being "too light" after the purchase, to me, implies that you've accepted the piece at the price you paid. I'm not sure if by "too light" you mean it's actually white gold, or something else... but either way, shouldn't you have contacted him IMMEDIATELY when you decided the ring wasn't what you thought it would be?!?

Yes, you are right (pp).. I should have let Juan know about it immediately. On the same note, tightening the prongs wouldn''t make the setting any different, IMHO..

Is the ring stamped? If it''s platinum, there should be a stamp with PLAT or PLAT and a number (showing the % of platinum vs. alloy) in the ring.

No, ring doesnt have any stamp on it.

I''m sorry. I don''t know anything about juan other than the very few things I''ve read here. As for the quality of the piece, I guess you could always email him letting him know what goings on. since time has passed I probably just have the setting remade and chalk it up to a learning experience

If the ring doesn''t have the stamp, then you might need to check your original invoice/order statement to verify that you ordered it to be platinum. If so, you can use that to discuss the situation with Juan regarding that.

As for the prongs, you should be able to discuss it with them either way if the security of your stone is in question. That''s quite a big issue in my book.

Sorry for your disappointment though.
