I didn''t want to thread jack....but Storm wrote the following in a re-cut thread (https://www.pricescope.com/community/threads/recutting-a-steep-deep-diamond.86220/)

"before you recut it clean it.
That combo will be dirt sensitive so keep it clean.
That could be why it took you a long time to notice it.
Get a home ultra-sonic and run it thru it once a week."

The diamond in question was:

1.44 I VS2 RB
7.3x7.33x4.3
Table 56
Depth 61.5
crown angle 35.5
pavilion angle 41.2
ex polish and symmetry

Can someone.....maybe Storm...Elaborate on this? What would make a certain angle combination more sensitive to dirt?

The theory is that steep/deep combos tend to react to dirt more so than other combos.
All diamonds look better clean.
Garry is the expert in this area but I believe he is busy with JCK.
While I would rank it one step below a widely proven fact it is a good theory in my opinion.
The exact location of the cut off point is the big debate.

I would guess it all comes down to what is the index of refraction of ''dirt'' :)

Still its probably a fair bet that it will be higher than air, so it would increase the angle required for total internal reflection of the light off the pavillion facets back up into the diamond resulting in more light loss.

So I could definately see how there would be a cut difference if different cuts had more/less light reflecting off the pavilion close to the critical angle.

Thanks for answering my question...

You can also look at this from a broad perspective...ALL diamonds are dirt sensitive...VERY dirt sensitive...especially to grease - the basis on which diamond rough was separated from rocks/gravel in the old days!

...so to get the most out of your stones...keep them clean for best results!
