Hi,

I recently bought a ideal cut diamond with strong fluorescent. In direct sun light, the diamond looks to dark when face up. I was questioning if it was the fluorescent that is making the diamond look dull or if it''s normal that in direct sun light diamond should looks darker when face up?

Thanks for the replies.

An ideal-cut diamond going dark in the sun has nothing to do with fluorescence.

Well-cut diamonds appear darker in direct sun because they do such a good job of returning the sunlight back into your eyes.

The reflected sunlight is so bright that your pupils constrict, making the diamond seem dark.
The body of the diamond IS dark compared to the reflections of the sun.

Nothing is wrong.
Enjoy your diamond.

That said, I recently got to see a fancy intense yellow with strong blue fluorescence in direct sunlight. Under any other light, the stone looked beautiful. However, under direct sun light, the color completely washed out of the stone and the deep honey yellow resembled more of a W or X white diamond.

Yes, off topic, but the effect of strong blue on a yellow diamond intrigued me :)
