Last month DH and I went to our local gem and mineral show.
Luckily, he likes weird rocks almost as much as I do!
He picked out this cool dinosaur bone cab, which we bought from the guy who cut it.

I promised to make him a ring. So this was today's project.

And here it is on DH's hand....he likes it!
He's also wearing a fire agate ring I made for him. He likes jewelry.......and that makes me so happy!

Bold and clean! I've wanted something with dino bone for so long. Thanks for the inspo... handsome piece!!

Thanks, @Autumn in New England! It was fun to make.
The dino bone is so interesting, it comes in so many colors and patterns.....and what a great conversation starter, don't you think?

Omg is that an actual bone??? DS would go nuts over it if it is!!!

Yeah, actual bone! The guy had a whole tray of them, and we picked out the one we liked best.
Here is some info from a random web site about dinosaur bone in jewelry:Screenshot_20221016-073949.png

Super cool!!!

Oh and I also want a megalodon tooth! But every time I go to buy one, I decide I'd rather have another gem. :roll2:

Yesh, whole ones in good shape are kinda pricey. I've seen them at the mineral shows.

@stracci2000 I have a Native American necklace made with fossilized ivory from a mastodon... and I thought that was cool. Dino bone is waaay cooler.

Red spiny oyster, a turq bead, and carved sterling rose, as well.

This is cool! I love the skull and spiny oyster star!

I would love to see you make something with high-grade variscite... that cool, pistachio green gets me every time.

P.S. Do you think you'll ever take custom orders, my friend? I have so many fine cabs waiting to be set!!

I see lots of variscite jewelry on IG, and I agree it's gorgeous!
About custom orders, I've done that in the past, and it is stressful! I'm trying to reduce stress in my life.
I'm sorry......I know you must have amazing stones! But thank you so much for asking!

I'll be honest... that would stress me out too. I want less responsibility in life! And these softer stones can be unpredictable. Well your friends and family are lucky to have such a talented silversmith in their midst!!

Thank you for the nice compliment!
I have cracked or chipped many of my own stones in the past. It would be a nightmare to mess up someone else's stone!

Wow! You’re so talented!!!

I always love seeing your creations and I never knew you could buy dino bone in stone form! So cool!

So cool!! I was reading a dinosaur book to my boys at bedtime and we talked a little about bones. I told them that you could even make jewelry out of it and they got such a kick out of it. Love this statement ring.

That's gorgeous! I love the look of the polished bone and the design of the ring.

I don't mean to poop in the punch bowl, but...you may want to get it tested and see its level of radioactivity. I'm not joking. When I was a teenager, I spent summers with Jack Horner (the paleontologist) in Glacier National Park excavating (read free labor LOL) and learned that many/most dinosaur bones are mildly radioactive. Something about the processes they went through becoming fossilized (I don't remember the details.) They don't give off enough particles to be a problem excavating them or visiting them in a museum. But you wouldn't want to wear it against you body for extended periods of time. You don't want DH's finger to grow some kind of weird tumor because of it. Just have it checked out to be on the safe side. Get a geiger reading on it.

Wow, that's interesting information! I have not heard of this before. I will definitely look into it.

Edit:
I did some research just now online.
There's a guy who is the guru of gembone, which is the term for dinosaur bone cut for jewelry.
He has a video where he tests the radioactivity in pieces that are cut for jewelry. His tests show that the level of radioactivity in small cut pieces is very minimal and basically harmless.
Wow! Thanks for the info, I would never have known this!
