So I have a very nice diamond thanks to the folks at Whiteflash who were especially patient as I fumbled my way through sending a wire transfer. (I''m pretty sure it''s not supposed to take a week, right?)

Now I''m working on a setting. As a straight male that doesn''t work in the jewelry industry, rings are more or less like shoes to us. ("They all look the same. Can you just pick one out so we can go look at TVs now?) Plus, my particular gal isn''t much of a jewelery person... so I can''t just go through her stuff and get a sense of what she likes, so I''m trying to keep it a bit simple. She''s got pretty short nubby fingers, and she''s a surgery resident so big complicated pieces are probably out.

Anyway, with the help of every single female that I''m still on speaking terms with, I''ve narrowed down the selection...
kinda hoping someone with a little more taste than myself can tell me which one''s the least terrible.

This is my friend''s fiance''s favorite. And just saying that out loud is fun.

This one''s fairly simple, but I''ve been fooled by photos before and cannot find a jeweler that stocks this, so it would have be custom made sight-unseen. I went to their website to find the closest vendor for this designer. When I got there, they told me they didn''t really do much business with them anymore and then proceeded to sell me something much less attractive at a much higher price.

Variation of the above. Little more flair but still stays classy, right?

Very simple... this is Blue Nile''s site but I''m pretty sure I could get something like this anywhere.

Saw something similar to this today at a jeweler and it was quite nice, but it was also a selection from that selfsame friend''s fiance.

So please, I beg you all of the Pricescope community, any comments would be great, maybe even a suggestion or two.... you''ve treated me well so far!

I personally like the first two best.

Sometimes people propose with a very simple solitare setting, and then let their FI choose the one they want -- that might be an option too...

Others in the medical field might know what the limitations on the setting are. I''m thinking maybe it shouldn''t be too high if she will wear gloves over it...?? Just guessing.

Congrats on choosing a diamond!

My suggestion is to go with a WF setting. Theirs are as nice or nicer than the ones on those links. And you will have the advantage of having the stone covered for damage while it is being set. if you wanted an unusual setting that they didn''t sell, it might be different, but they have several that would be similar to those. let me look and I''ll post a couple of my favorites.

But there are many others. WF has a wide selection of nice quality diamond engagement rings.

I personally like the second ring you posted.

To be honest, I'd recommend a solitaire, especially if your girlfriend a) isn't a jewelry person and b) is a resident- does she have to wear gloves a lot?

Unless she says she prefers a pave/shared prong setting, I'd go simple and relatively worry-free. Something like this:

X-Prong Setting

...or this:

Classic Tiffany Setting

Yep, I second getting the setting from WF - not much point going elsewhere if its not necessary, may just be a headache.
I also ditto getting her a solitaire - most versatile and easiest to wear. WF make lovely quality settings, I have one of their solitaires myself, she won't be disappointed (even if you can't tell the difference, lol )

I just wanted to say that my personal preference is a solitaire e-ring such as the Legato sleek line with a diamond wedding band.

I think that there have been a couple recent threads about what type ring works best for active women who use their hands a lot or wear gloves. I think that some of those ladies chose to go with a low profile bezel setting to avoid tearing a glove. I think it depends on if she would be wearing her ring while working or just wearing a simple smooth wedding band or simply taking off her ring to work. Oh and welcome to Pricescope by the way!
