So today I have received the pictures of the new claw that has been laser welded to my pear cut engagement ring. I will try to figure out how to upload from their email so you can see.

The original claws were scalloped & shaped so that they went straight up from the shank before scooping out under the diamond to cup it. This was done so that I could wear it with no claw grating or damage to my full eternity ring. After much discussion following getting advice from here (thank you all) I agreed to let them laser fit a new v-prong to replace the snapped one. However, it is NOT shaped & is just a wedge, protruding from the front base up to the point of the diamond. Whilst is looks lovely & has been finished well, it looks in side profile like 2 entirely different halves of ring soldered together, as the back 2 are still shaped but now the front isn't. Not only does this remove the option of me wearing the pear either way on my finger against my eternity ring, I am also cross because the scalloping was the main detail I specifically wanted, not to mention how much it has made my blood boil that they didn't consult me prior to the work that it wouldn't be the same! I mean seriously, what on earth are they thinking that it would be acceptable to do this??

I cannot tell you how angry I am. I have emailed them to say no, I am not happy, I do not want the ring sending back & I want to know who made the decision about the new prong style. We have paid thousands of pounds for this D colour VS1 stone, and a further significant amount to have a very beautiful custom setting made. It was a serious investment on my husbands part & it looks lop sided & like its about to topple over. I am not sure it is acceptable for a mother of 2 young children to be drinking wine at 3.30pm on a Friday afternoon, but I have had to pour myself a large glass. Gutted :blackeye:

Will try to post a pic....

Oh my gosh I'd be so mad!!!

Here it is...

I am, my lovely. I am SO angry! These guys are serious professionals & reputable! Does anyone else think this looks good to go, or is it just me??

I totally agree with you that it looks like 2 different rings from each side. Did they give you any indication how they were going to move forward (provide a new setting, completely new head, etc.)?

I agree that it is unacceptable. But did you show them or tell them specifically how you wanted it done beforehand?

Wow, it seems crazy that they didn't match it to the other claws. In my opinion, that should go without saying! I hope they're able to fix it for you. I'm super picky about claw prongs myself so I understand your disappointment.

There was discussion of a new head, which is what I wanted them to do, but in the end with my permission of a laser weld only, they decided a new head was unnecessary & they could just replace the v-prong. I did ask LOTS of questions about the security of doing this etc, and thank goodness this has all happened over email so I have a paper trail, but at NO stage did they say that the new prong would be entirely different in style to the others. Silly me for assuming they would make it match the others....

Besides this being my new engagement ring & without wanting to throw around figures, we have paid £7,800 for this diamond & a further £1,100 to have the setting made, only for the v-prong to snag & me loose my diamond after 9 weeks of wear. Thank god I found the stone. But it should be perfect & durable for all of this....

I can't see why that should matter. Its like taking pants to a seamstress and saying "please make this leg the same length as the right one". I agree I think it should go without saying. Unless maybe that's what all the hip kids are doing "one weird prong

I wouldn't say I was a hip kid

But I agree. If we agreed for them to replace the v-prong, then there should have been no question about it matching the others on the ring...

A quick update. As I had taken lots of pictures of my ring in its exciting new setting, I was able to show the jeweler that I was right & they were wrong, and indeed the front v-prong was also scalloped in shape. Today it has gone back to their workshop for 'modifications' to be carried out to ensure my complete satisfaction.

Why they didn't just cast a new head as I had originally requested, I have no idea.... :nono:

Bec they wanted to do the least amount of work as cheaply as possible. If you were on the hook to pay for it, you can believe it would've been the most expensive, time consumingly labourious thing on earth.
