When a ring is die struck how thick can the metal be on a tiffany style setting. Would the ring have to be very flat. Rings made by Van Craeynest are die struck but they look chunky and I thought due to the nature of striking out the metal it would be thinner. I know the prongs on like the Stuller mounts are die struck but how are the bands made like that as they seem to be thick at the shoulders.

Die striking does not limit thickness or relief. It depends on how the die is constructed and just how the design was created. Die struck jewelry tends to be more toward the plian side, but it can be quite complex with the use of multi-part dies and multiple strikes. It is a costly set-up process so the tendency is to make many units at a time when possible to cut costs. Casting can be efficiently done in small units and there generally is less set-up labor time.

Some extremely light jewelry is made with die striking. Some very heavy things, like award medals, are also die struck. There is no single answer.

I've seen die-struck wedding bands that look just like regular wedding bands.

And by chunky do you mean thick? My Van Craeynest band is only about 2mm thick and about the same in width as well.

Thank you Oldminer.

I didn't realise they could be made thicker, I think it is just the light jewellery I have seen before, for example I have cat earrings which are flat and thin.

Yes, I was meaning in height up from the finger. As Oldminer said coins can be die struck which I should know but never thought of them when thinking about jewellery. I was just thinking as I said about the extremely light jewellery sold in mall stores, you know the heart pendants, thin identity bracelets, thin wedding rings for like $30 etc.
