Did you compromise with your fiance on the e-ring?

First let me say that this site is so addicting! My e-ring was custom made and I was so inspired by all of the beautiful rings on this site. You''d think that since I got the ring I''d stop looking, but I can''t help myself. Now everytime I see a new design I think, "Dang!! Why didn''t I see that before my ring was made!! Initially my fiance wanted a round solitaire, and although those are classic beauties, they''re just not for me; I wanted something with a little more zing. I had my heart set on an asscher or cushion, with an ornate/pave/halo setting. So you can see we had a little problem. We decided to compromise - we went with the round, pave/halo setting. So I have two questions:

1) Did you compromise with your fiance and if so, do you regret it?
2) Since I didn''t get the asscher or cushion with the ornate setting, any ideas how i can make it up in the wedding band? Any pics?

Thanks in advance!!

well, i''m sure your ring is beautiful. i have seen some bands that are channel set asschers or asscher/round combos. i don''t know how channel set would look with your pretty ring but you can do some searches and see for yourself!

I think that many people compromise what they want in order to stick to a budget or make their SO happy. I''d love a 2 ct. ring with lots of pave or side stones, but that wasn''t in my ff''s budget. I''m not sure if that''s a compromise, though, as I''d much rather have him than a 2 carat stone!

Yep. We compromised on the ring, the wedding, the house, the car, just about every meal, and so on. That''s how life is. The best part of your e-ring is that it belongs to you. None of the others on PS do. Enjoy wearing it.

As you point out, the wedding band is coming up. I love these asscher rings. link Don''t know how it will look with your e-ring, though. One solution I encourage is to get both a plain metal wedding band, as well as a blingy diamond one. The metal one can be quite inexpensive and is terribly practical. Over the years I have found myself wearing the metal one at times I can''t wear the fancy rings...when cleaning, gardening, camping, travelling, bathing the babies....

Embrace the compromises. And, have fun looking!!!

I think most couples discuss the engagement ring and probably compromise some in that process. We compromised on the style and the costs. He wanted to spend significantly more and had planned to get a round brilliant solitaire in the 2 - 2.5 carat range and I wanted a simple eternity band to use as an e-ring and wedding band.

He was open to any ring I wanted, but wanted to get me more than a band. I told him I wasn''t comfortable with him spending more than half of his original budget and I had liked asscher cuts for years, so that part was settled. He didn''t have much of an opinion on the ring itself, he just wanted to make sure I liked it.

We''re both happy with what we got: he didn''t spend more than I was comfortable with, I got a 1.5 F VS, very-well-cut asscher and I got the eternity band as a wedding band.

I think most men just want to make sure the woman loves her ring and because you did compromise a bit on the e-ring, I think the wedding band should be your call. I like the idea of having asschers in the wedding band--you could do a 5-stone, channel-set or prong-set. I''ve seen so many asscher wedding bands over the past several months so there seem to be many options. The best thing to do is probably try on a bunch of different styles and see what you like. It literally too me months to decide on a wedding band, haha.

Well I compromised...but he doesn''t know it! I mean what girl WOULDN''T want a big ering? But reality is that we''re both graduate students and couldn''t afford my dream ring. So I compromised for a smaller version. But I did get the setting and shape I wanted, just a bit smaller than my "ideal" ring would be! But it wasn''t a compromise in the sense that I chose exactly what I wanted regardless of what my fiance preferred (luckily he really liked what I chose!).

Your ering sounds stunning. Maybe later you can get a rhr in an asscher cut!!! The first ring he gave he chose, and I never really liked it. My first upgrade he did totally on his own and I loved it. My second one I chose myself!

your ring sounds pretty :)

i was in the same predicament a few months ago with my bf - he wanted to get me a round stone in a simple setting, and was horrified when i told him that my favorite cut was emerald. then when i mentioned that the only type of setting i really liked for myself was a halo setting, he was downright mortified (maybe my language is a little strong, but you get the idea). but after looking at enough ECs in person, he came around to actually liking it, and when he realized that the round stones in the setting help to give it the ''fire'' that he liked in an RB solitaire, he actually started to like the whole style. so personally i am glad that i didn''t compromise because i was lucky enough that my bf came around - but if he didn''t/hadn''t, i would have been pretty bummed if i knew that my he was going to give me a ring that he didn''t like at all...and i''m sure it would have grown on me :)

as for the wedding band...it''s hard to say without knowing exactly what your ring looks like. most halo settings are unfortunately pretty limited with what kind of bands with fit/look nice with them...

have you maybe considered getting an asscher five stone or eternity band to wear separately from your ering? fly girl had a great idea - you could get a simple band to wear with your ering, and then on days when you wanted to wear your asschers you could just switch your ering to your right hand. that way you might have more options as to what to do with the asscher ring because you won''t be limited by making it fit with the ering.

either way, good luck!

My FI had very definite like and dislikes on e-rings.

In fact he hated them all until I showed him the Pokey Special - he LOVED it.

In fact he proposed 10 minutes later!

I now have a similar looking ring which I adore.

The Pokey Special below in all it''s glory for those who don''t know it:

Thanks so much everybody for your responses! I''ll look into the asscher/round combo and see what that looks like. as mimzy pointed out, i might be pretty limited in my choices b/c of the halo. And yes, i love my ring!! It''s funny - I was reading some threads yesterday about halos being rare in the "real world" but not on PS. Everybody tells me how pretty my ring is and that they''ve never seen anything like it. I guess because I see a lot of them here I didn''t think it was that unique. Much to my surprise, I guess it is!!

I''ve tried to take pictures but it''s so blurry you can''t see where the halo ends and the diamond starts. It looks like it''s 5 cts!! i guess that''s not such a bad thing huh?

Pandora that ring is beautiful!! See? Why didn''t I see that before mine was made?

Forgive me if this is a stupid question, but what''s that stone?

It''s a tsavorite garnet.

I have one in my e-ring too and they are sooo gorgeous. Mine changes colour in every different sort of light. Daylight it''s bright green, electric light it goes really dark green with flashes of neon green - kind of like the emeralds in Disney films look!

They''re only a 7.5 on the moh though so you have to be a bit more careful with them.

Actually this style is very popular right now, and of course jewlery is a fashion that takes longer to spread for several reasons, including most of the lower end are still trying to sell off older styles, and other parts of the country that are not as trend oriented take a while to acclaimate. It''s not like teenagers are buying e-rings, but people with more established likes and pre-conceived notions of what an e-ring looks like, so marketing has to be very targeted to this group, and continual.

Princesses took a while to get popularity, but they did... Rest assured, the cushion and the halo trends are out there and very hot right now, BUT the rest of the pack not involved in jewlery (as most PSers seem to proactively be) take a while to catch up. I venture to say that PS happens to be on the cutting edge most times of the jewlery trends, so if it happens here, you can bet it will spread (albeit slowly)...

By the way, If you use a macro setting (flower shape button or setting on your camera) it will help focus the detail work on the halo. Also, in the past before a camera with good zoom, I used to take a magnifying glass or even the magnified part of the Idealscope and put it onver the lens of my camera to increase the focus power. Might want to try that...?
