Did my friend get a good deal or a rip off?

Hey guys, what do you think of this diamond ring that my friend got for his fiance?

Specs:

6.03 x 6.00 x 4.00 mm
1.00 Cts
GIA Class I (what does that mean by the way?)
Depth: 66.7%
Table: 57%
Crown: 15.8% | 36.3%
Girdle: Thick, Faceted
Pavilion: 48.3% |44%
Polish/Symmetry: Very GOod / Very GOod
Clarity: GIA:SI-2 AGS:6
Color: GIA: E AGS:0.5
Fluorescence: None(lw)

He got the diamond for $9000 ($5000 cash and $4000 from a trade up). He says that the appraisor appraised the diamond fo $13,632


It also has 6 Round Brilliant Cut small diamonds on the side (total weight 0.35Cts)

ETA: Does the price include the setting with the side stones? If so, do you know if it was a designer name setting?

If that is for a stone by itself, its overpriced. Way overpriced and not cut that well.

From the info given, it seems like a round diamond. If so, a 1.00ct RB should measure about 6.5mm, so this stone would appear/face up smaller than it should.

Also, is the metal for the ring white gold or platinum?

Pavilion 43° and crown 36° would end you up with a good candidate for AGS-10. In this case, with 44° pavilion, it would be a good candidate for AGS-20, on a scale from 0 to 10, with 0 being the best.

True value of this stone, at best, is somewhere around 3000$. And in that case, I would still have it re-cut to a 0.75 Ct, in order to bring some sparkle in it.

well the 14K gold ring isn't worth more than 1K based on similar settings you can find online. I'd say you friend was ripped off

That stone is worth, unfortunately, at best 1/3 of the paid price. Who appraised it? How could the appraiser state the stone belongs to GIA I class being so deep?

This diamond was obviously cut for size (to make the "magic" 1 carat mark) - and in doing so, beauty was likely quite compromised. It''s deep, it''s steep, and it faces up small for its size. I hope its eye-clean. It is a nice, high color grade, though!

Have you seen the ring? What did you think? Does your friend like it? Most important, what does his GF think? Unfortunately, he paid too much... and could have bought a larger, better cut stone online... but if it is non-returnable, hopefully she loves it... that''s really what matters most.

Well then, that is the main thing! If the diamond makes them happy and they love it then that is all that matters! We here see on a daily basis probably some of the best cut diamonds available, but that doesn't mean that your friend's diamond isn't beautiful and special. You can't always explain the magic and beauty of diamonds by the numbers, of course they are important but sometimes they aren't everything. Maybe if they had discovered Pricescope before their purchase, they might have chosen differently, but in the end they went by what their eyes told them and the eyes are the best tool when shopping for diamonds. That is the trouble for asking for opinions with a done deal, sometimes you are told what you might not want to hear, but our opinions aren't as important as those of the couple who own it and wear the diamond!

Congrats to your friend and his fiance on their engagement and their ring!

YIKES. that is one deep round. i'd venture to say it probably has a big dark spot in the middle under certain lighting.

in actuality it faces up to the eye like a .75c stone. not a 1c. so there's a loss of almost a quarter of a carat.

i sooo wish people would take the 5 minutes to find PS *BEFORE* spending $8k on something. that is not petty cash! he could have gotten something like a 1.20 super ideal colorless SI2 for that same money with a $1k setting in platinum for that money.

in any case, sure if they are happy with it great. but in reality, since you DID come on here and ask, they overpaid for a too small ring and a setting that could be gotten elsewhere for cheaper. hopefully now your friend knows not to shop at that same store in the future and to use pricescope BEFORE a purchase for anything else!!! that's a positive for sure!

ignorance surely is bliss..and i mean that in a sincere way. if only we didn't know 1/2 of what we did!!

Well honestly, I don't think that stone is something most of PS'ers would purchase. HOWEVER since he can't return it and both his girlfriend and himself are happy with it...then I think he just move on and enjoy it. Now if a) he was unhappy or b) there was something that coud be done, then we could help him out. But right now, he's enjoying his purchase...so as Mara said, I think in this case, ignorance would definitely be bliss

I was honest. If they are happy with it then GREAT. But since he asked, I put out my opinion of the price, stone etc. He could have hidden the responses from his friend if he didn't want to bum him out. But really if there is no recourse then why even ask how they did? If they can't return it, does it matter?

However, why people ARE here typically is for diamond education. So ideally this same friend could know from this thread and what people wrote, that in the future to research a little more carefully before his next big purchase. To me that's a big positive.

I personally find these types of "case studies" threads very helpful in learning how to apply diamond knowledge to real life scenarios and circumstances. Since I never bought a diamond i''ve learned most of my knowledge from these forums thru some sort of osmosis. I''m not always clear on best numbers and angles and price ranges, etc. But I think seeing how a situation like this in which a complete ring is presented to a buyer at a given price w/ certain specs probably often happens to prospective new diamond jewelry buyers, honest and factual responses including the reasoning behind them can be very useful to someone browsing these forums.

Also I think in the rockytalky area of the board, a frankness about price and quality is expected whereas in SMTR price and quality are not usually a concern.
