Did I order the right size?

A while ago, I got my right ring finger sized at a jewelery store as a 4.5. I ordered a ring in that size and had to return it because even though I could get it on and off, it felt tight and it dug into my finger in an unflattering way. Recently, my boyfriend bought me a claddagh ring for my right hand in a size 5.5. It slides on and off easily, and it slides around a little when I wash my hands or when I''m writing a lot or when my hands get sweaty. Most of the time it sits pretty straight and is very comfortable, though. I guess it will fit a little looser in the winter.

We ordered my engagement ring (for my left hand, obviously) in a size 5.25. I figured my left hand would be a little smaller than my right, and I figured it would need to be a little tighter because it''s a thinner band and it''s top heavy and will therefore be more prone to spinning. Today, though I''m wearing my claddagh on my left hand around the house, and it doesn''t really seem any looser on my left hand than it did on my right. If I shake my hand, it''ll slide down to my knuckle, but it won''t fall off.

Should I change the order to a larger size? I''m a little paranoid about it being too small. Is there a big difference in size between a 5.5 and a 5.25? Since my fingers are more likely to get larger than they are to get smaller, should I plan for the future and order up to a 5.5?

It may depend on the thickness of your claddagh ring...is it a lot thicker than your e-ring? I wear a 6 on my right hand and a 5.25 or 5.5 on my left. Usually thicker rings fit more snug than thinner one's. Did you get your left finger sized prior to placing the order?

I am interested in this topic too. I am having a custom ring made so if the size is off then I will have issues. I assume a designer would make a ring (6 3/4) that would fit the same whether a thick or thin design. It appears I may be mistaken.

Also, is it easier to size a ring up or down, or does it matter?

My ring will be mostly pave, but will have a small sizing bar on the bottom.

why dont you just go into a jewelry store and have them size your left ring finger?

there is not a huge diff in a 1/4 size at all, but the ring will be tighter in summer and looser in winter. you just don''t want it too tight to cause discomfort or too loose to slip over the knuckle.

If you are having a ring custom made locally, the jeweler will more likely than not size your finger beforehand. Rings with a thicker width will fit more snug than a ring with a thinner width...I am talking about a difference in MM of say 2mm compared to 6mm.

Unless you get a full eternity ring, you can usually have your ring sized within about 1/2 size pretty easily and inexpensively. In fact the place where you order the ring should probably size it once, included. It is only a problem if diamonds or engraving go all the way around, or if you are having a really big amount of sizing done. Sometimes you dont know for sure til you have worn the ring as to how you want it sized. For example my w-band is sized smaller than my e-ring simply because I almost never take it off and I didn''t like how it rotated around when it was bigger!
