hello all,
i''ve been reading ps now for about the past 2 or so months and it has proven most valuable in my search for the perfect diamond! Thankyou all for your helpful comments.

I''d just like to get a few opinions on a loose old european cut stone that I have recent purchased. It''s specs are
1.24ct, G colour, VS2 clarity with a GIA certificate. It has a 47% table and a 66% depth. The stone appears sparkly to my eye and has a tonne of fire and I am generally very happy with it. The price I paid was $6550USD and I was hoping for a bit on input on this in particular. Does it seem like a reasonable price to pay for a stone with these specs?

I am also about to take this stone to be looked at by an independant appraiser. Is there anything in particular that I should be seeking from an appraiser? I guess the two things that I myself would like to get from the appraiser are

1) is the stone indeed the one described in the certificate and does it match in terms of its colour, clarity, carat etc
2) is the price I paid a reasonable price

Is there anything else in particular that I should seek? It seems to make more sense to me to get a valuation on the entire ring and diamond when it is finished (I plan to set this stone into an engagement ring).

thanks!

How big is it (diameter, not weight) ?

OECs sell for a bit of discount compared to modern round brilliants. Much of this is dues to their smaller appearence (''cause of the deeper cut).

As far as I can tell, the price is ok. If there is better out there depends on how this stone looks, and that I can''t guess from this side of the screen

I too have an OEC stone with very similar specs. I LOVE it and it does have tons of fire. The diameter of my stone is 6.5 and it is cut a little deep like yours so it faces up as a 1 carat stone rather than a 1.2 carat stone. Can you return the stone if you feel you didn''t get a good value? If the purchase is a done deal, enjoy owning a rare piece of history.

Thanks for the link denver appraiser, it has helped me think about a few things that I had never before considered!
The stone is about 6.7mm in diameter. Like mrssalvo and valeria were implying, I''ve read that OEC''s tend to have a smaller diameter due to most of their wegiht being in depth rather than width. I am still within the 30 day return period for the stone however I do like the stone and have a feeling that I will keep it anyway unless the appraiser says something that will change my mind - it''s just good to have a bit of reassurance:)

hello everyone
I have managed to obtain an ideal scope image of the rock but have absolutely no idea how to interpret it beyond what little I understand (ie red = light return, white = leakage, black = contrast)

I''d much appreciate any input:D

Here's a Key to IdealScope Image that came off my Apprasial from Richard Sherwood.

Dark Pink - High light return (brilliance)
Light Pink - Lesser light return
Black - High contrast (scintillation)
Gray - Lesser contrast
White - Light leakage

Note - Dispersion (fire) is not yet measured by DiamCalc, although some experts maintain that the high intensity black areas are indicative of "hotspots" of fire (rainbow colored "flashes' of light return).

That is a cool old cut.

It will look big because there is very little leakag near the edges, but the bitsthat are there will be providing contrast.
It could loose a little in the center from face on because there is not much light return there.

If you go to www.ideal-scope and check this out http://www.ideal-scope.com/manuf_fine_tuning.asp - you will see why it has fewer but bigger firey flashes.
If you read thru the newsletters, about 3 and 4 i think - you will get the idea about contrast etc
there is also a reference chart
