Hi everyone! I have been lurking for a few days and am very impressed with the knowledge of people on this forum. It has taken me a few days to work up the nerve to post my question, partly because I may not really want the answer! Well, anyway, my husband purchased a wedding set for me for our 25th anniversary. Let me mention that he purchased the ring in an antique/vintage jewelry store that is considered reputable. He was told the ring is circa 1920''s-30''s (I have a love of older rings). I may not even be posting this in the right section, but the center diamond is GIA certified so I thought I could get an opinion as to whether he paid too much for the set. Let me also mention that I absolutely love this set, so if he did make an error please be gentle lol. He and I, like so many "lay people", focus on color and clarity when evaluating a diamond and don''t consider cut, which I am quickly learning from this forum it is quite important. The GIA report states: round brilliant, 1.03 carats, G, VS2, thin-medium girdle, good polish, very good symmetry, culet none, table 63%, depth 57.7% I know that the table is very large due to my new-found knowledge. This report was done in 1998 and does not include the pavilion or crown angles. The setting is white gold and consists of two separate rings that have two .07 diamonds, 21 .02 stones and 20 .01 stones. He paid $4000 for it.

Let me also mention that we don''t really know a whole heck of a lot about this ring. The setting is in pristine condition, maybe the stone was added at a later date, I don''t really know.

As I''ve said, I adore this set, looks big, pretty and sparkly on my hand, but for some reason I am obsessing that he paid too much. Should probably just let it go, but I can''t help but be curious about it. I''m a big girl, I can take it, but try not to be hard on my hubby, he''s a great guy lol!

Thanks in advance to anyone who takes the time to reply!

Are you going to return it if you did? If you LOVE it then let it go

HI Junebug,
I would venture to say he did not pay too much - especially if you love it as much as you do. It sounds lovely and we would love to see
some pictures. Old rings are a favorite around here. I put your numbers into the diamond search engine and the prices for a GIA stone
came up anywhere from $4700-$7000. Of course without the pav and crown angles its hard to tell how well its really cut. This is for
the stone only - no setting. I''m going to go out on a branch and say you did just fine but there are experts out there that may say
differently. Congrats on your 25th and your new ring! Please come back with some pics!

ya, price looks good. What is the physical dimension of the stone?

With regards to the stone''s optical performance and authenticity, maybe send it to an independent appraiser who specialize in old diamonds?

Welcome Junebug

It is hard to say for sure with the info given but the price looks ok to me, I wouldn't worry about it unless you HAVE to have more info, then get the set appraised by an independant appraiser to tell you exactly what you have and to value it as a whole to give you an opinion on the purchase price.

Appraiser tool - https://www.pricescope.com/appr_list.aspx

I would just enjoy your set and that your Husband gave you such a special gift. Numbers are one thing but with older cuts if this is the case it is harder to call so I wouldn't worry too much by comparing it to a modern round brilliant with dimensions and so forth. You say you love the set, its a done deal so no need to worry about optics and numbers and so forth unless you want to change it, it does not sound as if this is the case so enjoy the beauty!

Thanks so much for your quick responses, I really appreciate it! What a great group of people!

Yes, down the road I may take this for an independent appraisal to someone who specializes in older rings and diamonds. As I''ve said, I''m not sure how old this diamond is, but I''m wondering if it''s a newer stone that was added to the set. The dimensions are 6.65 - 6.69 x 3.85. And I''m assuming at this point that it''s not a very well cut stone. But as Lorilei so very well stated, at this point it doesn''t really matter, it''s a done deal, I love the set and get alot of enjoyment from it. It doesn''t sound like he was horribly taken advantage of, so that''s good to know. And thanks for the congrats on the anniversary! 25 years, I can''t believe it! And I''m having a little trouble posting pics, but I''ll figure it out so stay tuned!

Glad to help! I am looking forward to seeing pics of this - if you are having trouble rename the file something unique, for example ring1 is unlikely to work and don''t use any unusual characters in the filename. Also make sure the pic is the optimum size for posting. If that doesn''t work then email the image to admin who will post it for you.

Thanks Lorelei, your response made me feel much better about things! Let''s see if I have this pic thing down...

Try changing the filename, if you have used the name once it won't work again. You can try just changing a couple of letters or numbers of the filename and see if that works too.

Junebug, it sounds like a lovely ring and a good purchase. I can''t find any G VS2 GIA certed stones around 1 carat that cost less than your entire ring. It sounds to me like your price was very reasonable.

My engagement ring diamond is from an heirloom ring and has similar table and depth measurements (I also don''t know the crown and pavilion angles). No, it does not have the symmetry or natural sparkle of my ideal cut diamonds and it doesn''t look great under my IdealScope, so I just make sure I keep the thing spanking clean. I take my rings off to wash my hands (although do so at your own risk in public restrooms, of course) and I use my Branson ultrasonic almost weekly. I get tons of compliments on how sparkly my diamond is, which I believe is thanks almost entirely to how clean I keep it. Most people don''t know anything about cut and they don''t keep their diamonds clean, so at least I can do the latter!

Junebug,
I'd say your husband got an AMAZING deal on a lovely set of rings. It looks like a 10-15K set *easily* to me. And your stone looks very sparkly & bright & clean. If you were a crazed cut nut (like some ladies on here - you know who you are!) you could look into getting the stone re-cut into an "ideal" cut at sometime in the future --- but why? It looks fab as is! Would the loss in size be made up for by the super ideal magical stats? Only you can be the judge of that.

I'd keep it & wear it & love it & rest easy in the SUPER FANTASTIC deal & SUPER FANTASTIC love of it all. Happy 25th!

ETA: The more I look at it the more I wonder if he may be fibbing to you a bit about the price. Its like TOO good of a deal!

Phoenixgirl, you are absolutely right about keeping the ring clean! It really does improve the sparkle and shine. It''s amazing how dirty a diamond can get just by daily wear. Thank you so much for taking the time to tell me about your stone and for the positive remarks. I appreciate your advice. In fact, it''s good advice for all of us to keep our beautiful rings spotless!

I am one of the major cut nut culprits here

* cough* but I wouldn't worry about recutting or tweaking if that set was mine, I would wear it proudly and enjoy it!!!

Lovely photos, gorgeous set. Your husband is a true GEM! Gracious... no worries necessary here. Congratulations, and may you have many, many years of thrills and enjoyment with your new set (and your wonderful husband)!

What a wonderful anniversary gift! Your new rings are just gorgeous and I hope you will cherish them for their beauty as well as the sentiment behind them. It is easy to get caught up in the diamond statistics and numbers on this forum, but the reality is that you have a set that anyone would be proud to wear. And no I don''t think your husband got ripped off at all. Congratulations and enjoy!!!

Very pretty set!! I don't know about it being from the 20's or 30's, but it's a keeper! Congratulations on your 25th anniversary!
you know swingirl, I also question this ring being from that time period. I love antique and vintage rings, and I've never really come across this type of setting, although this style tends to be though of as "antique". I will say that I have stumbled across a few rings with colored stones on the internet that are said to be from the 30's in a similar setting as the e ring. And yet, there is something "old" about it (for lack of a better description lol). I'm certainly far from an expert. I also have to wonder why a reputable store would lie about something like that, unless they were just misinformed. Who knows, maybe the setting was made in the 1990's lol. No matter, it's beautiful and hopefully I'll wear it in good health for many years to come!
