My husband says he recently saw a report on TV about a new cut of diamond that looks dull or does not sparkle. They were not low priced and were supposedly a new trend
He is not that interested in diamonds and admits that he was not that attentive but was certain that this was what he heard.
I was wondering whether anyone else saw this program and can shed more light on this subject.

How naive do they think consumers are? Oh, I just think I answered my own question

Maybe it was talking about ROSE CUTS ... they are quite dull when compared to brilliant cuts ... more like chandelier crystals than "diamonds" ... yet they're enjoying a big come-back ... partly due to their GIANT face up size/weight.

ETA: they've gotten a lot of coverage in fancy mags like Town & Country in the past 2 years ... sometimes morning shows are a bit behind the times??

I immediately thought of rose cuts too (it helps that I just saw one in person for the first time -- a 2c Dutch rose cut). Because of the faceting, most of the sparkling was going on at the "edges" of the stone, but it was beautiful -- if not my *first* pick of old cuts!

Here's one off the web:

Alternately, any chance it might have concerned the recent upswing in popularity for rough diamonds in jewelry?

I have a feeling that is the answer, Circe.

Well, a diamond that does not sparkle is about as appealing to me as a cold and dreary day!

I agree! Why not just wear glass? Give that poor diamond to someone who can help it!

Angie

Glass doesn''t sparkle and it has no FIRE. I guess a rose cut would be OK if I had all of the other cuts already. BUT that will be quite a long time from now!
