Diamonds in the 60''s-higher quality?

My late mother receivedher diamond engagement ring from my father in the late 1960''s. I''ve never had it appraised, but it is a beautiful marquise stone (just under half a carat...but slightly more than a 1/4 carat) it is eye-clean, and beautifully white. It was set in white gold with a small marquise set east/west on each side. I know my father knows NOTHING about diamonds...so I am impressed with his choice. Was the diamond supply better in the 1960''s?

I don''t see any reason why the diamonds would have been better then. My guess is that there is improved cut precision now. It sounds like your father must have used a jeweler who carried some nice stones!

Perhaps...a legendary Golconda stone?

Diamonds from this mine were known for incredible colorlessness and transparency..."Super Ds"...near-mythical in stature. Diamonds displaying no color and great transparency are classified as type IIa, meaning they have no nitrogen - chemically pure and colorless.

I'm reminded of another thread showing a colorless marquise, here.
