RESEARCHERS in Japan have developed a way of speeding the growth of artificial diamonds thus paving the way for diamond semiconductors.
Diamonds are regarded as the semiconductor material of the future because they possess greater mechanical strength and higher thermal conductivity than silicon.
The Japanese National Institute of Advanced Industrial Science and Technology announced that in the latest experiments it passed a plasma of methane, hydrogen and nitrogen over a small seed diamond and increased its volume by a factor of 12 in 55 hours. This was five times faster than with previous techniques and is an encouraging development. µ
