Hopefully some of the ladies who have done this can help me here.

How exactly does this work? When you upgrade your diamond, do you get anything for your old diamond? In a way of an exchange or anything, like you do when you trade in a car?

Depends entirely on the vendor and their policy...

Ditto, also vendors rarely take diamonds as a trade in that they did not sell. That is why it can be worthwhile to purchase from a vendor with a lifetime upgrade policy.

As mentioned, most non-chainstore vendors will typically only accept stones they sold for trade-ups.

Within PS vendors, most of us do have some trade-up policies for stones we have sold. Some require certain dollar value increase for the upgrade purchase; others require upgrades to be done within a defined timeline from original purchase date.

I can't speak to everyone's policies, but ours is 100% of the original purchase price (less shipping charges) toward a trade-up purchase of greater value; it applies only to GIA/AGS stones we've sold.

Ah, okay, thanks. I probably should have clarified that the trade-up would be done through the same vendor the original was purchased from. I will make sure to ask about that before I purchase!

Fantastic. I suspected that might be the case, but I didn''t want to assume and then steer you wrongly.

In my experience during my consumer days, most of my local B&M stores had some trade-up provisions, but they typically required spending at least 50% more than the original purchase price. Some had limitations on their trade-ups on larger stones because it can be harder to move them.

Are you the one with the really unique ring? What would you be trading it in for?

My experience is that most stores accept trade ins but if you didn''t buy it from that store they often go off of what they feel your ring is worth rather than what you may have paid for it.

My ring is from Mervis Diamond, which is a B&M in the Washington, DC area. They have a 100% lifetime trade-up value on all of their stones (but not settings). So, if you spend $10K on a stone, you can trade it in for an $11K stone only having to pay the $1K extra, with tax. When I "downgraded" from my 2.25 ct asscher to my 2.01 ct RB, the RB actually cost about $2000 less than the asscher did. So, they let me trade in the asscher for the RB, as long as I spent over $2000 on another product. I got a pair of 1.16 cttw diamond stud earrings that were retailing for $2100, so I only spent $100 on my "upgrade" and got a great new pair of diamond studs along with it! :)
