That is really sad! It's a shame when women don't step up and take the initiative and buy what they want when their husbands generally have no clue. . .Date: 10/27/2007 3:30:17 PM

That reminds me of my mother in law. She has a diamond that is small but the bad part is that it looks too small for her. Just looks out of proportion. (I've seen plenty of 'small diamonds' here that look stunning because they have good proportion.) Anyhow, she has loudly admired a few of my rings on several occasions. I feel like this woman could really use an upgrade! They have plenty of $$ and it wouldn't have to be anything extravagant.
The reason it bugs the hell out of me is because my father in law is constantly upgrading the car he drives. He is always trading in for the latest sports model while my mother in law drives an old used car. Just because my MIL never complains about this doesn't mean she wouldn't like an upgrade herself. (Besides in my opinion my FIL has her so dominated that she wouldn't dream of asking for anything like that for herself. But that's a whole 'nuther story!)
Or maybe if the idea of an 'upgrade'/replacement isn't attractive then she could get a nice RHR.....
I'm surprised at how often I see this situation with the husband seemingly feeling free to spend and the wife not. Even though they both worked to earn that money.![]()

My original e-ring was 0.21 ct which I got in 1975. I upgraded to 1.5 ct F VS2 for our 25th wedding anniversary. I still have my old wedding set. The rings are too small to wear because my knuckles stayed larger after having children. I don''t think the original diamond is worth much. I take the set out and look at it once in a while.![]()
Hubby upgraded from a plain wedding band to a 0.33 brown diamond wedding ring with 6 small Lazarre Kaplan melee side stones for our 17th anniversary. His fingers had gotten larger as well. Besides, men didn''t get diamond rings for wedding bands when we were first married and he wanted some sparklies too. Lots of the men he worked with had diamond wedding bands after their second marriage. We decided it was just fine if we both got new diamond rings, but kept the same old spouse! LOL!Then, last Christmas I got him a 2 ct raw brown diamond ring to wear as a RHR.![]()
All of this happened pre-Pricescope. I''m biding my time before I get a 2 ct ring for myself; ideal cut, of course!!!![]()
Here are his rings (I'm the model). He wears the yellow gold ring as his wedding ring. He loves the patina and won't let the jeweler polish out the scratches. The raw diamond is tension set in Damascus steel and palladium. The stone is a nifty octahedron crystal.Date: 10/27/2007 4:35:47 PM

I tried to get my Hubby to think about having a small diamond in his upgrade band but he just couldn't do it. He's pretty conservative for a guy that had a green mokawk when we first met. LOL! I do like the new band that he chose though. It has some sort of textured looking braided platinum in the middle. I can't wait until it gets here!
Yep. We love the Damascus steel, too. Son got a yellow gold and Damascus steel ring last year for 21st birthday. No diamonds in his. This was in lieu of class rings for HS or college, which he hates!Date: 10/27/2007 5:39:59 PM

Thanks Fly Girl! I really like that swirly metal on the tension set ring. My hubby liked it too and considered something with that for his new ring but we ended up going with one that was more like his old ring.
I got a whole new set, my old one is sitting in my jewelry box.Date: 10/27/2007 3:31:31 PM

So I have a question for all of you upgraders - what did you do with your old diamond & setting? Replaced the diamond into the same setting or got a whole new ring?
I think there is a diamond shrinkage virus lurking on PS. The longer you hangout on the boards the more dangerous it becomes!!Date: 10/28/2007 8:48:37 PM

I upgraded from my 1.53 to my 2.36 after having the 1.53 for about a year or so... the darn thing was gorgeous but had shrunk down to almost nuthin''!!!![]()
Now my current one is doing the same darn thing, too...
but I just may have to deal with it. I *ASPIRE* to a 3.5+''er, but I''m just not sure that that is (realistically) in the cards for me.![]()

Oh, almost forgot... I changed settings, too... consigned and sold my first setting through Pearlman''s Pre-owned selection... Bill was wonderful to work with, and I heartily recommend him!

My original e-ring was a 1.33 ct pear with small pears on the sides. After seven years I went to a 3 ct oval... and that lasted about 6 months before I got the 3.37 round. And I ain''t done yet!![]()
What''s your upgrade size going to be, Maisie??Date: 11/10/2007 1:34:12 PM

My engagement ring is a .25 princess cut. Its in an awful setting and its not well made. My husband bought me a .55 ACA from Whiteflash which I wore for approximately 3 months before shrinkage set in and I upgraded to a .72 ACA. I have had that for around 3 months and I am upgrading again! This one will have to stay for a while though, as we are renewing our vows in 2009 and need lots of money for that!![]()
