So I have a question for all of you upgraders - what did you do with your old diamond & setting? Replaced the diamond into the same setting or got a whole new ring?

That reminds me of my mother in law. She has a diamond that is small but the bad part is that it looks too small for her. Just looks out of proportion. (I've seen plenty of 'small diamonds' here that look stunning because they have good proportion.) Anyhow, she has loudly admired a few of my rings on several occasions. I feel like this woman could really use an upgrade! They have plenty of $$ and it wouldn't have to be anything extravagant.

The reason it bugs the hell out of me is because my father in law is constantly upgrading the car he drives. He is always trading in for the latest sports model while my mother in law drives an old used car. Just because my MIL never complains about this doesn't mean she wouldn't like an upgrade herself. (Besides in my opinion my FIL has her so dominated that she wouldn't dream of asking for anything like that for herself. But that's a whole 'nuther story!)

Or maybe if the idea of an 'upgrade'/replacement isn't attractive then she could get a nice RHR.....

I'm surprised at how often I see this situation with the husband seemingly feeling free to spend and the wife not. Even though they both worked to earn that money.
29.gif
That is really sad! It's a shame when women don't step up and take the initiative and buy what they want when their husbands generally have no clue. . .

My husband is funny. A few years back, he bought a new truck so I said, "well I'd like a new sparkily (rhr) since you have that great new truck to show off." What does he do instead? He buys me a new car!!! lol

I had mine reset, I combined 2 rings into one, it was the .18 diamond and on the sides it had channel set very small rubies and diamonds, then I got too heavy and couldnt wear the ring and it cant be sized up that far
29.gif
anyways after quite a few years I had the diamond removed and had it set in a earring for my hubby.

My original e-ring was 0.21 ct which I got in 1975. I upgraded to 1.5 ct F VS2 for our 25th wedding anniversary. I still have my old wedding set. The rings are too small to wear because my knuckles stayed larger after having children. I don''t think the original diamond is worth much. I take the set out and look at it once in a while.
20.gif

Hubby upgraded from a plain wedding band to a 0.33 brown diamond wedding ring with 6 small Lazarre Kaplan melee side stones for our 17th anniversary. His fingers had gotten larger as well. Besides, men didn''t get diamond rings for wedding bands when we were first married and he wanted some sparklies too. Lots of the men he worked with had diamond wedding bands after their second marriage. We decided it was just fine if we both got new diamond rings, but kept the same old spouse! LOL!
2.gif
Then, last Christmas I got him a 2 ct raw brown diamond ring to wear as a RHR.

All of this happened pre-Pricescope. I''m biding my time before I get a 2 ct ring for myself; ideal cut, of course!!!

Cool! (pictures!!)

I tried to get my Hubby to think about having a small diamond in his upgrade band but he just couldn''t do it. He''s pretty conservative for a guy that had a green mokawk when we first met. LOL! I do like the new band that he chose though. It has some sort of textured looking braided platinum in the middle. I can''t wait until it gets here!

My hubby upgraded my .64 diamond to a 1.36 on our 10th anniversary. It was a wonderful surprise. My first diamond is now set in a pendant.

12 years... went from a 1ct pear to a 1.74 rb.

Here are his rings (I'm the model). He wears the yellow gold ring as his wedding ring. He loves the patina and won't let the jeweler polish out the scratches. The raw diamond is tension set in Damascus steel and palladium. The stone is a nifty octahedron crystal.

Thanks Fly Girl! I really like that swirly metal on the tension set ring. My hubby liked it too and considered something with that for his new ring but we ended up going with one that was more like his old ring.

Yep. We love the Damascus steel, too. Son got a yellow gold and Damascus steel ring last year for 21st birthday. No diamonds in his. This was in lieu of class rings for HS or college, which he hates!

ETA: He hates the class ring styles. College itself is fine, I think.

My mom upgraded her setting after 15 years. She went from a solitare and plain wedding band to a blingy (copy of a Michael Barin) halo setting with a 1/2 eternity band and two other diamond rings. She didn't upgrade her center though. I *think* it's a little over a carat, it's white and very pretty sparkly. I'm fairly sure it's a GIA excellent stone, but it's not an 'ideal' cut. She thinks her stone is large enough, especially with a halo. And while she considered upgrading her stone, she didn't want anything "gaudy", and wanted excellent cut, high color AND clarity... all of which she had to start with, so she's content. She generally likes more understated pieces though. I was surprised by her choice of setting, but apparently one of my aunts (who is a BLING addict) talked her out of the ritani she was considering and into the Barin inspired setting she has now. Since her upgraded she wears her 1/2 eternity and two bands stacked more than she wears her e-ring and 1/2 eternity though-- she saves those for evening wear.

John has asked me not to upgrade my center stone. But has said I can get additional diamond rings. I'd like a new diamond ring 11 years from now (I've had my diamond for 4 years) or so. Right now, I'd a like a 3 stone. But that's easy to say now, who knows what our priorities will be then. I am a diamond freak though.

Here's the picture of the ring that inspired my mom's new setting:

I got a whole new set, my old one is sitting in my jewelry box.

5.5 years. The other half refused to buy an intermediate diamond.

I upgraded after 16 years, I kept my center .88 E VS2 and put it in a Scott Kay setting with side stones and a nice 1 ctw 5 stone w-ring
36.gif
I love all the sparkle!

30 years! My old 1 ct. rb is still in it''s original setting. I got new rings with the new 1.63 ct. diamond.

I upgraded from my 1.53 to my 2.36 after having the 1.53 for about a year or so... the darn thing was gorgeous but had shrunk down to almost nuthin''!!!

Now my current one is doing the same darn thing, too...

but I just may have to deal with it. I *ASPIRE* to a 3.5+''er, but I''m just not sure that that is (realistically) in the cards for me.

Oh, almost forgot... I changed settings, too... consigned and sold my first setting through Pearlman''s Pre-owned selection... Bill was wonderful to work with, and I heartily recommend him!

I think there is a diamond shrinkage virus lurking on PS. The longer you hangout on the boards the more dangerous it becomes!!

Uhhh....yes. The only downside to the site. Before I came on here my .90ct EC was the most stunning diamond in the office. Now I''m asking my fiance how long I''ll have to wait to get an upgrade to a 2ct.!

Me and my husband got married on Sept. 8th of this year. Out of the 5 rings and 1 necklace he has bought me, I am only going to ungrade one of the rings and the necklace. He said I can upgrade on our first anniversary. I may eventually change my mind, but for now I am happy with the ones he got me. I have 1 engagement ring, 2 wedding bands, and 2 right hand rings (both are on my right ring finger. One is blue and white diamonds and the other is an eternity band). The eternity band is the only one I think I may upgrade that is if it still looks good without upgrading the blue and white one. Plus once we have another baby I get one stackable for each of our 2 kids with diamonds and their birthstones. None of my rings have very high carats, but what can I say I love things that sparkle and glitter doesn''t do it for me anymore.

Were already married when I got my first diamond. Upgraded after 24 days.
36.gif
Wow, this has to be the record, right?

If I do decide to upgrade, it won''t be sooner than our 10 year anneversary (we''re not married yet). There are things we want to do with our money first, e.g. save it for when we have kids.

Before we bought the ring, we talked about upgrading down the line. But after wearing my ring for 6 months now, I may never upgrade because I LOVE what I have and the desire to upgrade has vanished (which I never thought would happen
2.gif
).

As for what to do with the old ring, I''d put some kind of colored gem in the setting if possible. We got the center stone from a vendor with an upgrade policy so it would be traded in.

I was given a three round e-ring when I got engaged. The center was 1.61 and the total weight of the sides was 1.43. Now I am getting an upgrade for my 30th b-day (we have been married three years). I am keeping the side stones and changing the center to a 2.57 (H/SI1). I am so excited.

My original e-ring was a 1.33 ct pear with small pears on the sides. After seven years I went to a 3 ct oval... and that lasted about 6 months before I got the 3.37 round. And I ain''t done yet!
9.gif

I got a beautiful, well cut .78 oval set in platinum with baguettes for my e-ring in 1998. The setting cost about as much as the stone--DH knew I wanted platinum--but I had no idea how much it costs! I would have been just as happy with a wh gold setting....but he wanted the best he could afford :) I only upgraded last year when my e-ring was accidentally left behind in my make-up bag in a hotel. Of course, there was no make-up bag turned in. I went to a 2.02, sq emerald, vs1, H with strong blue........It was quite a jump in size, but we are much older and more established now. In fact, I just added my avatar ring as an alternative to my e-ring.

Good for you!!!!

My engagement ring is a .25 princess cut. Its in an awful setting and its not well made. My husband bought me a .55 ACA from Whiteflash which I wore for approximately 3 months before shrinkage set in and I upgraded to a .72 ACA. I have had that for around 3 months and I am upgrading again! This one will have to stay for a while though, as we are renewing our vows in 2009 and need lots of money for that!

What''s your upgrade size going to be, Maisie??

My upgrade was going to be 1.04ct but because its a hassle upgrading from the UK my hubby says I should go a bit bigger and stop upgrading for a while! I''m not arguing! I have seen a 1.28ct that I am really interested in.
9.gif

I''ve upgraded every year (3rd anniversary this year) and probably will continue to do so. DH loves to buy me diamonds and I LOVE to wear them. :-)

I got an upgrade 2 months after we were married. The original diamond was a .54ct RB, L SI2 set in a YG tiffany setting. My upgrade was to a .904ct RB E, SI2 H&A diamond set in a WG setting.
Dh will allow me to upgrade one more time. Next one will be roughly a 2ct.
9.gif
Can''t wait.

My original diamond was put into a four claw pendant. My YG Tiffany setting sits in the jewellery box.
