I''m in search of the perfect Rock (sort of...my budget is around $5k and maybe more if the rock is worth it). I have been reading some of the tutorial but am still somewhat clueless. I found this Gem (see below). I ran the HCA tool and it looks pretty good. Is there anything I am missing. I just want a ring that''ll scream "bling bling" TIA for any advice out there.

Hi Bling,

The only things I see that I would find out more about is the 1. The Fluorescence. Make sure it's not adversly affecting the stone, usually it doesn't. And 2., I'm pretty sure in SI2's, "additional clouds" can be a problem, but that doesn't mean always.

Definitely ask about those, and can you get an IS image by chance?

Other than that, it looks pretty good!

Thanks for replying ellen. I read about fluo but im not sure what strong blue means is that good or bad? is there a tutorial on clouds?

No, strong isn''t "bad", unless it makes the diamond look milky or oily in the sunlight. Many people love the effect of it in diamonds (and actually seek it out). Just have your vendor/jeweler check it out for you.

You can do a search on clouds, not sure what all you''ll find, although I''m sure there''s threads. I was going by what an appraiser said on here once. If there''s too many clouds, it can make the diamond dull. Chances are yours is fine, but it''s just prudent to ask. Then there''s no surprises!

just for reference, i bought a "strong blue" flouro and it is clear as day, except when in sunlight then it is blue as day. I like the flouro effect and think it is cool.. you have to decide for yourself. it is not as taboo as some make it seem to be.

what does "inscribed" mean. I was looking at a particular diamond and the comments stated "inscribed"

start here for fluorescence:

I was looking for one with strong blue because it can actually help improve the color in the lower colors. However, the one a vendor located for me didn''t effect it either way.

inscribed usually means an identifying number or label has been etched in the girdle. It can be used to I.D. your stone but requires magnification to see.

Welcome!

Ellen is right, if clouds are the grade setting inclusions then they might be a problem, if just mentioned under comments as clouds not shown, then they are rarely an issue and just mentioned for completeness. Check with your vendor about the clouds, but if they are ok then this diamond is potentially a cracker by the numbers!

The clouds "not shown" are non-factors, but if there are also abundant or sizeable clouds plotted - and no other noticeable characteristics - that could be a flag. In many cases, grade-setting inclusion(s) in an SI2 are noticeable crystals and/or feathers.

thanks for all the great info. I see that some diamonds are GIA and some or AGS. is there a difference is one better than the other?

most AGS stones are AGS ideal. but both labs are well regarded for their grading.

AGS has stricter standards for cut quality (GIA excellent does not always equal AGS ideal). Both are very reputable for grading color and clarity. AGS-graded diamonds usually come with a higher premium.

alright im getting close to making a decision but I do have another question. I notice that the color scale from i-h jumps up about $800-$1k. how noticeable is i color vs h color? Im not sure if the price increase justify going for a higher color

This depends on your own eyes unfortunately and colour sensitivity. A reliably graded I colour is where the industry believe that the layman might begin to see a hint of tint, but some can in even an H. But generally an I is still a very white colour grade and in a super cut will face up well too, assuming the I in question is well cut.

ok guys I call James Allen to inquire about 1.23 carat diamond AGS cert SI2 I color. I asked for eye clean confirmation. they said there's a small inclusion that can be covered with a prong. I'm assuing that the way i mount the diamond I can hid the inclusion. Have you guys heard of this and how common is it?

FYI the original diamond I inquired about was already sold.

James Allen iis a trusted vendor and they are being totally honest with you. It''s not unusual for a diamond to be set with a prong covering an inclusion totally or partially. as long as the vendor is up front about it and you''re comfortable with it..there''s no problem. A prong covering an inclusion with no disclosure IS a problem.

Here''s the update. I went through JA on a 1.23 Icolor SI2. My next step is to get it mounted. what type of setting allows for the best bling? I''m leaning towards tiffany because it sits the stone higher. I could really use some advice on this. thanks
