Diamond to diamond ratio

Recently, a jeweler suggested that the diamonds in the setting shouldn''t be larger in carat weight than the center stone. For example: a 1 ct. center should have no more than 1cttw. in the setting. He said it could be less, but more would make the center seem smaller. What''s your opinion?
 
I'd offer that this is all about personal preference.

I shudder to think what would happen if we tried to shut down all of our side-stone and melee enthusiasts. Can you imagine? They would storm the castle with pitchforks and torches (and their massive bling looking fabulous in the torchlight).

Take a look at some different examples online and in person and go with what makes you happy.
 
My rule is that a ring is nopt a 3 stone unless the 2 side stnes add up to more than the weight of the center.
If 2 stones = less than center it is a solitaire with shoulder diamonds.
