I need to test diamonds and have learnt a lot of old wives tales such as

1. use a black light? where would you get one of them anyways lol
2. use on glass? wouldnt want to do that! dont want to damage the diamond in any way
3. use a 10x loup? i tried that... ho hum, will leave that to the experts and i dont want to go into a jewelers with every purchase i make!

any useful information falling short of buying those expensive gadgets?

Why would you need to test so many diamonds? Can''t you just go to a trustworthy vendor?

How many diamonds are you testing? If you have that many, you should be able to afford the expensive machines? Can you just take them to a certified appraiser?
 
I once did a charitable fundraiser where they filled up a bowl with CZ’s and included one diamond. People would buy a ticket to pick a stone and I’ld ID it for them to see if they got the diamond. It was good fun and raised a decent amount of money. No one found the diamond and at the end of the day we were left with a bowlfull of CZ and I had to pick out the stone myself. Anyone care to guess how I did it?

Hmmm... now that's my kinda fundraiser!

Specific gravity liquid?
 
Turned them all upside down on a newspaper and looked for the one you couldn''t read through?

Made sure the diamond had fluorescence when you chose it in the first place and took them into a dark room and shone a darklight on them?

Some method where you didn''t have to check them one at a time, that''s for sure!
 
Easy Neil. You gave them to women and stopped at the one where you didn''t get slapped.
 
Those are some fine suggestions. I especially like the idea of using fluorescence since there’s the myth that CZ is fluorescent and diamonds are inert. Nope, I emptied the bowl into a large cookie sheet and filled it up with water. It turns out that, underwater, diamonds look very different from CZ’s. It was just a matter of picking out the one that was different. The final confirmation was with one of those expensive gadgets although this was more for show for the crowd than as a matter of actually testing anything.

Cool! What''s the difference in underwater looks?

I particularly need to know because I''ve commissioned a diamond-studded bathing suit & I want to make sure I get my money''s worth.

I have never heard that about diamonds and CZ in water before. What exactly is the difference in them under water? That sounds like a neat fundraiser, but I am sure that people were upset they didn''t find the diamond!

There''s one stone in the dry photo that looks different--it has a wider rim of darkness around the edge, kind of like in the wet photo but not as dramatic. Is that the diamond?
 
Probably. It doesn’t really show up in the pictures but another thing to look for is that diamonds take a distinctly better polish than CZ and the difference shows up easier in the water. I wasn't actually watching all that carefully when I took that picture but my choice would be this one.
