I am shopping for ~3 ctw diamond stud earrings to commemorate a personal milestone. I'm trying to decide between AGS Ideal rounds or some chunky OEC's. Setting will be a 6 claw-prong style in white gold or platinum and sit as low to the ear as possible.

The earrings will be for everyday wear and I'm not concerned about future trade-up; this is the largest size I would wear for my lifestyle/ear lobe size.

My brain says AGS for the sparkle/versatility but my heart says OEC for the chunky flashes/uniqueness! What do the PS experts think?

Folks around here have both. I think that some people think the round brilliant - especially AGS - sparkles more on the ear orientation. You see the studs differently than you do a ring on your hand. However, hopefully you will get opinions from OEC lovers as well. I personally love the super ideal cut diamonds, but can surely appreciate the beauty of the OEC diamonds. I voted according to my preference but let’s see what others have to say! Good luck in your search - do you have any pairs in mind yet?

I have both (in lab diamonds) and love each for different reasons. To me, the OECs have a chunkier and more subtle sparkle. The RB’s have sharper flashes, if that makes sense.

What I do like is the high crown on the OEC so the setting height is lower to the ear.

I prefer old stones but I like modern rounds for a traditional stud setting.

I think they show up more on the ear. If you were talking about dangling earrings, or something that wasn't a basic stud setting, I would answer different.

I think probably modern for studs. My rings with round or cushions are all old cuts but my studs are all MRBs. I certainly wouldn't refuse studs in old cuts, but I like the sparkle of the MRBs and honestly, it's easier to find matching stones in your size, color and clarity preference so that's why I went with them for studs.

This is helpful, thank you! My first inclination was super ideals for the sparkle, but of course I can't help myself by overanalyzing all the options.

I have a couple pairs I am inquiring about. Since I don't have anything on hold yet, I'll wait to share specs but would love input once I get a little further in the search.

That absolutely makes sense and love that you have both, perhaps this is my solution? I've wondered at this size, if the super ideals might even be a bit too large and sparkly (I know I know, is that even possible?) for every day. Maybe I'd be better off with the larger OEC's and down the road finding smaller super ideals.

Good point about the high crown on the OEC, I hadn't considered that. I've read the entire SMTB stud thread and know I want to prioritize a low setting! Appreciate your insights :))

They're much smaller than you're thinking about, but I have a 1.28ctw pair of transitional drops that I purchased from another PSer. Adam from Old World Diamonds apparently found them. If you're willing to hunt, a transitional pair might be the best of both worlds for you because you get some of the chunkiness of the OECs but the brightness of MRBs. Of course getting a super ideal MRB pair is much easier, but that doesn't matter if your heart says OEC!

Absolutely - we will help in any way we can!

I voted for AGS ideal stones for the maximum sparkle on the ear. I think OECs are beautiful but I prefer them in a ring where you can appreciate their more subtle flashes.

Well, I decided to go with the AGS ideals! I found these stones that met the spread, color and budget I was looking for and figured I couldn't go wrong with Brian Gavin. How did I do?

Well since I am totally jealous I think you made the right choice!

I didn’t chime in on your thread earlier but I agreed with everyone else who said MRBs for studs unless old cuts fell in your lap. This choice you made is perfection.

Those will be beautiful…great choice!

Fabulous choice! Can’t wait to see them. Earshots are a must!
