I have a very subjective question but wanted to get some opinions.

My gf''s ring size is a loose 3.5. She is very petite and weighs around 95 lbs and is around 5''3". We went to a jeweler to get her sized and also tried on some rings to get an idea of what diamond sizes would look best on her.

She agreed that a simple round cut on a platinum setting without any side stones and such was what she wanted. Having said that we tried various diamond weights and personally I thought 1.3 was a nice and decent size. Initially I was aiming for around 2 carats but after trying that on it just seemed way too gawdy and unproportional to her.

The culture I''m from is unfortunately very superficial, although my gf isn''t, however her friends are. I don''t want her to be embarassed so i''m willing to spend the money for a good size but nothing too disproportionate. I think I''m going to aim in the range of 1.5-1.8.

Does anyone have any experience or opinions regarding diamond sizes relative to ring size?

My ering is a 3.75 and my diamond is .84 and people tell me it looks much bigger than that all the time. What size diamond does she want? If she liked the 1.3 then I''d go for that - you can always upgrade later

Have you decided on a round brilliant shape?

Because if there is a magic carat weight that is socially/culturally important to you (e.g., 2 cts.), you could always choose a cut like an asscher or emerald cut or cushion that faces up slightly smaller on the hand, but would allow your gf to tell her friends that she''s wearing a 2 ct.

Ditto DD, find out what size she truly prefers and go with that.

Ring size and diamond size is all relative to personnal choice... I am a 5.25 and my pear is 5.13. All my friends think its a little too big on my little hand ( short fingers ) but to me, its perfect. i think its all in how a diamond is set... I think my best advice is to try on as many rings and styles as possible to make sure of what she likes and drawn to :)

Wow that small finger with that big of a diamond. I think it will look huge on her. I have a 5.5 and I cant ever think of going over 1 carat, its just too big of a look for me. As the others said its all about personal choice. Also if you want the mental fact of being able to say 1-2 caracts, as pointed out you can check a different cut which gives you the size in width and not so much the height. That all being said, it all comes down to personal preference and what she will be comfortable with. Just make sure for her daily activities the stone will work and she wont get in to an issue that its always sliding off to the side and annoying her. Some people like that, others hate the movement. So just a few scenarios like that to think of. Ultimately its what you both will really want. Hopefully you can find one that you both love, regardless of what others will think. Plus keeping in mind, she can say 1 carat, but if her "friends" dont have great cut quality diamonds her 1 carat will kick butt over any 2 carat that isnt cut well.

That''s a great idea - it balances proportion and carat size nicely.

What does she want? Did she agree that 1.3 looked best, or did she think she could go bigger?

Thanks everyone for your opinions/advice. My gf is pretty set on wanting a single round brilliant cut. Would anyone be able to give advice on whether the following diamond are good?

1.768 carat

It seems like the above diamond has quite a few inclusions. How do I make sure this diamond is "eye-clean?" Any advice?

She liked the 1.3 but definitely showed interest in the larger diamonds. I think the 1.7 carat that I linked above might be too large for her petite hands. I really wish I could see it before purchasing it.

. I am even smaller than your fiancee-to-be (size 2.5 e-ring), and I wear a 2.12 ct center stone. I think the size is perfect for me! 1.7 sounds like a divine size for your petite lady.

ETA: I'd go for the larger size especially if she was gravitating toward larger diamonds.

I got my ring from BN and it was gorgeous. The cut and all other stats look great on it. I dont think BN sells anything that isnt "eye clean" from what I saw on their website but Im not 100% sure of that. If I were you, I''d call them and ask their customer service people. They have fabulous support, and in most cases they can confirm. Plus you do have the return policy if you dont like the ring for some reason.

Unfortunately, not true. It's happened where they say it is, yet it gets to the consumer and it's not. That's why I pick VS2's when searching their stones.

If she was interested in the bigger stones, I think a 1.5 - 2.0 RB would make her quite happy! I don''t think it will look to large on her hand, especially if you''re planning on setting it in a classic solitaire setting. The stone will be the star!

Well I''m with Kittybean

My view is that if you can afford it and she feels she can pull it off, a larger size is fine (I''ve tried on round brilliants ranging from 1.3-2.45, and I maxed out at 2.25 or so - and my size is a 3.25).

Thritto.

If she can pull it off (and as you said she showed interest in larger diamonds), I''d def go for the 2ct. I wear a 3ct on my 4.25 finger and think that a 4.5-5ct rock would look best on my hand!

I think ring size really does greatly affect how a diamond looks on someone''s hand, but it''s not just the size but also finger length that matters. I have short, size 2.75 fingers and the largest diamond I wear is a round .90ct. I would love a pear or oval 1+ carat but they swallow my fingers and look gaudy. Does your gf have long fingers? If she does, I think she can probably pull off a larger diamond, whether she decides on a round or fancy shape.

I also think if you come from a culture where size matters, you should go for the larger size. I didn''t think I would ever want anything over a carat because my hands are so small, but have now set my diamond in a halo for a larger effect. I think 1.5ct will be a lovely size for your gf''s hand - I can''t wait to see the pictures!

It''s totally personal preference. I have 3.5 ring size as well and my RB is 1.22 ct. Everyone tells me it looks bigger than it is.

If she wants a larger stone, and you can comfortably afford it, then go for it!

it's def. personal but I don't think 1.7 would look too big on a 3.5 sz finger but that's me. If your GF showed interest in the larger stones and you can afford it...why not just get it? My center stone is 1.77 but my ring sz is 7.5 and if I wore the stone alone it would look lost on my fat fingers (thank god it's Halo'd).

My sister is a sz 4.5 and has a 3ct center stone but has side stones..I think if she had a solitare it would look HUGE but the balance of the side stones make her hand look amazing.

BTW I'm from NYC too and there are many ppl here with stones that are 1ct and above. So if this is what you both want..who cares what her friends think? Do you live on the UES? If you do then I get it...

Thanks again everyone for your input. I feel a lot more comfortable getting the larger diamond. A friend of mine bought a 2ct for his wife and I honestly thought the diamond was way too big for her, but she was happy and that''s all that matters to my friend.

I think I may just go with the diamond I linked. I did put in the specs in the Cut Adviser and it came out Excellent across the board except the Spread. Score of 0.9. The only concern I have is the diamond having too many defects. I will take the advice of calling BN to verify it is eye-clean.

I''m so glad I found this site/forumn. Thanks!

this is all very personal. 1.7plus isn''t too big. i am 5ft 3in, about 105lbs and have a size 4.5 finger and a three stone ring with a 1.75ct round with .5 on each side (all ideal xxx), and it barely covers my finger.

go for it!

Sorry about the thread-jack. Do you have pics of this fabulous ring? I am abt the same size as you, similar weight and abt 1 inch shorter. I wear a 4.25. I've been thinking of resetting my 3ct solitaire into a three stone ring but it hasn't worked out, so now am on a quest to reset my existing 3-stone ring with a larger centre, something just under 2ct. My sidestones are abt 60 pointers each.

phoenix,
i think so. i''ll try to find them. i also have aother three sstone ring. 2.5ct sapphire with .6 each sides (it grew from a 1.65, and may grow again to a 4ct). the photos are all together.

I recommend looking at the diamond before making a final purchasing decision if the website will allow that.

If you are purchasing sight unseen, you might be better off with a 1.50 ct. that''s cleaner especially if her finger is dainty.

Also, the larger and bulkier the setting, the smaller the stone looks in proportion, and likewise, the more delicate the setting, the larger the diamond looks in proportion.

Thanks, Rocks. Look forward to the pics. Sounds yummy. 4ct sounds DELISH! I've also thought of having a three-stone ring with a centre sapphire too, he he.

Sorry again abt the threadjack to the OP.
