Hello,
I purchased a Brian Gavin signature hearts and arrows diamond one month ago. Now I have diamond shrinkage syndrome, and want to upgrade. Here is my problem, I have a .70, J color, VS1 stone. To upgrade, you have to go up in two of three areas: color, clarity or carat. The carat obviously isn't the problem. When I search for stones at the 1 carat to 1.3 range, a lot of J's come up, but they are VS1's and VS2's. I would need to go up to VVS2 to stay with J color. If I look at I color, there was a VS1, but I wasn't thrilled with the HCA score (It scored like a 1.9, but everything was only Very Good). If you select the advance purchase ideal category, there are quite a few J's with VVS2 and even a few IF's. The problem for me with the advance ideal is that even with a VVS2, I would want to know what the inclusions are before purchasing ( a mind clean thing for me). The IF is overkill, but at least the diamond would be mind clean for me. Another option is to take advantage of the buy back option, but you lose 30% of your original purchase toward the upgrade. Or another option is to wait and see if more I color become available down the road in VS1 or higher clarity. My frustration is, there's a couple I'd be willing to purchase right now that are about three times the price I paid for the .70, but because they're J color, and are only VS1 and VS2 I can't upgrade, unless I'm willing to do the buy back and lose off the original purchase. What should I do? Thanks for any suggestions.

Let them know you're looking for an I, they'll try to get one in that fits the bill.

I think you should call them and ask them to help you. If they don't have something in stock, maybe they can get something. Your best resource is BGD. Start there.

Contact BGD. They should be able to help you.

As much as I hate their upgrade policy, in the past they have offered exceptions when considering something worth a lot more and nothing else was in inventory.

I have upgraded w/ BGD in the past. I think there needs to be a net increase in $ amount to upgrade to a larger size which is the most important factor in their upgrade policy. But it is best to talk with them directly about your options--they have always been very accommodating.

Thank you for the responses. I believe they are closed today, but I will contact them directly when they are open. I checked their website today, there are several I color in the .80's carat size in the $4,000 range, for advance selection(like I said previously, I'm nervous about not knowing exact numbers, not knowing what kind of inclusions, and not having idealscope and hearts and arrows images before purchase). I'd like to go over the 1.0 carat mark in I or J color. The J's I'm looking at are in the $7,000 range. I paid $2,300 for my J .70 diamond. I won't do an upgrade for $2,000 from a .70 to .80, but I will pay three times for the carat mark. I will find out from Brian Gavin if there's any flexibility in options. Thanks.
