I''m helping my son, a med student at UT Med School, Houston, with a diamond search for an engagement ring. We''ve already contacted Whiteflash and have an appointment to review stones on 9/21. Now I have to decide which stones we want to look at/call in, and I''m hoping you very, very helpful people can give me the benefit of your knowledge with some suggestions.

The only problem is that due to expenses of med school, my son only has $1800 - 2,000 to spend on a diamond (not including the setting) and right now, every penny couns! We have two smaller diamonds from his grandmother - not terribly valuable, but VERY sentimental, that my son wants to include in the ring. They are 3.4 and 3.2 respectively, (not carats, measurements) Color I, S2.

So I''m thinking we need the center diamond to be H, I or J color. Hopefully between .65 and .75 in carats, with excellent cut, vg or better symmetry and polish. We could of course go smaller on the stone, to a .50, but don''t want to go too small.

We want the stone to sparkle, so I know the cut is most important. And we need an eye clean stone if it is S1 or S2. I''ve looked at the HCA and all the tools, but wanted the benefit of YOUR experience, if you could share, please. You''ll be doing one stressed out med student and Mom a great, great service.

Thanks!

P. S. I''ve read many, many of your posts and feel like I know some of you! Great posts and great advice.

Are you looking for a round brilliant, or another type of cut?

Sorry, I''m new at this, it would be a round brilliant (the other smaller family stones are RB as well). Thanks so much for taking time to give your input, I really appreciate it.

Not a problem, always happy to help a fellow Houstonian. :P

Well, You may be able to find a .70-.75 I SI2''s for around 2k, but they don''t have any on their website right now.

They have some really nice .50+ on their website right now..
There''s a few very similar to this one:

And then there''s the biggest one a .737 ct I SI1 for $2606 if he does a bank wire transfer it''s less than credit, and he also gets a PS discount ontop of that, so it may save him a few hundred bucks.

You should bring your other diamonds with you when you go in for your appointment. It will help out tremendously if you''re able to put them side by side to the stones they select.. He may be able to go lower on his color if the side stones were graded less stringently, and he''ll be able to get a larger stone that way.

Give them a heads up, and tell them what you''re looking for. An Expert Selection or ACA. H-I eyeclean SI1 or SI2. They may get some more in stock by then.

Hi jp,

How nice of you to help your son!

I looked, but only found one in your price range. It''s a nice one though. And you could always ask them to try and rustle up more, although you''d have to pay a fee for the ones you didn''t get.

Ellen you beat me to it, that .777ct looks super great for the price. I had that stone in my watchlist for a week or so, comparing it to other in the .75-.85 range and it was a contender because of the stone you get for the price. HCA of 1.6, good is/aset pics, eyeclean. I ended up puchasing a .794ct I VS2 Expect Selection for $500 more, but if I were under the 2k budget I would not hesitate to buy the .777

Thanks to all of you who posted, I appreciate your input will keep those stones in mind. I''ll keep a watch over the site to see if any new stones come in and if ya''ll get a chance to do so, please update me on anything you find.

Is there any seriously good stone I should call in to Whiteflash to look at (realizing there would be a call in fee)?

Thanks again for being so helpful.

J.
