Welcome to Pricescope,

You cannot receive personal messages from vendors or other consumers on this site.

I just answered a thread a moment ago from another poster asking a similar question and looking for the same sort of diamond, so I will paste my reply here in case it is of help to you too.

Here are some suggestions if you want to shop specifically around 47th Street.

www.engagementringsdirect.com

www.michaeljay.com

If you don't mind travelling further afield then Jon at www.goodoldgold.com is in LI

Lorelie,

Since you mentioned Michael Jay, I searched on them, and saw you used them in 2005. How did you find them originally? Seems like apart from today, they haven''t been mentioned since 2007. Anything in particular bringing them to mind? How do you understand they compare with the other vendors we more frequently mention here.

Just curious.

Regards,

Hi Ira

I purchased from Michael back in 2005 and had an excellent experience. I found them by Googling and reading and comparing reviews. One of the things I particularly liked was that Michael had and still has a good selection of warmer colour stones. I thought I would mention him as the poster specified 47th Street and a fancy shape.

I don''t know if Michael can supply ASET and Idealscope for rounds or fancies, I need to read up and see what he offers these days.

Thanks for the tipps.

I checked on the sites you suggested and two of them bring good results for what I am looking for.

I also saw some diamonds on the pricescope search engine which are offered by different internet vendors (and not by the vendors on 47th street which you suggested). If I call up one of the vendors you suggested on 47th street would they be able to organize those diamonds os I can look at them and pick one?

Thanks for your help!

It depends, some of the diamonds are exclusive to some vendors if they are inventory, in house diamonds. Stones on the virtual listing which are listed by multiple sellers can usually be called in by any vendor.

Are you in NY? If so then you could make an appointment with the vendor/s of your choice to see some diamonds in person.

Also it is so important to find the best cut EC you can in order to end up with a beautiful diamond, so compare as many as you can in person if possible and also if you have any photos or other images of your contenders, post them here so we can help you with them.

And you are most welcome!

Don''t have any experience with the other two that Lorelei mentioned but I got my diamond from Mark T at Engagement Rings Direct. He''s known for his cushions so I''m not really sure how he is at picking out emeralds, but I''d still give him a call and see if he can come up with anything nice to show you.

Hello again...

Thanks for all your inputs!!!

I found a couple of EC diamonds and still have questions.

1. If I have to compromise do I rather compromise on colour or clarity?
e.g., G and VVS1 or E and VS1?

2. I understand that emerald is very delicate - do polish and symmetry have to be excellent / very good or is good sufficient?

3. I liked those 7 stones (focused on the 4Cs and l/w ratio...):
--> I know it''s quite a lot, but I don''t know how to break it down...

carat color clarity cut polish symmetry l/w table depth gridle
2.26 F VVS2 VG VG G 1.53 67.0 65.5 Very thin to medium
2.26 E VS1 VG G G 1.53 68.0 66.7 Very thin to thin --> is the very thin to thin gridle a problem?
2.35 G VVS2 G G G 1.49 65.0 63.4 Thin --> is colour G or the thin gridle a problem?
2.36 G VVS1 VG Exc VG 1.43 64.0 67.3 Thin to Slighty thick --> is colour G or the gridle a problem?
2.42 E VS1 NO CUT INDICATED VG VG 1.51 59.0 68.9 Thick to very thick --> NO CUT indcated: how can I find out? Is the thick to very thick gridle a problem?
2.53 G VS1 NO CUT INDICATED G G 1.44 9.23*6.43*4.44 68.0 69.0 --> NO CUT and no GRIDLE indicated: how can I find out?
2.75 G VVS1 VG VG G 1.50 66.0 69.0 Medium to slightly thick --> is colour G a problem?

4. All stones have quite a high percentage of depth --> where is the border...?

Will come to NY to surprise my fiancee...!!!

Hello again...

Thanks for all your inputs!!!

I found a couple of EC diamonds and still have questions.

1. If I have to compromise do I rather compromise on colour or clarity?
e.g., G and VVS1 or E and VS1? Higher clarity grades are often needed in step cuts as these shapes can show inclusions more easily than rounds for example, I would not go below VS2 for clarity, colour is more of a personal preference, E or G will be very white.

2. I understand that emerald is very delicate - do polish and symmetry have to be excellent / very good or is good sufficient? Some prefer at least very good and above, if you find an EC with good for one or both that you like then thats fine, also EC's aren't any more delicate than some other shapes.

3. I liked those 7 stones (focused on the 4Cs and l/w ratio...):

carat color clarity cut polish symmetry l/w table depth gridle
2.26 F VVS2 VG VG G 1.53 67.0 65.5 Very thin to medium
2.26 E VS1 VG G G 1.53 68.0 66.7 Very thin to thin --> is the very thin to thin gridle a problem? Might not be but get a trusted vendor or appraiser to check the very thin part is not a potential durability issue, they aren't always but do check.
2.35 G VVS2 G G G 1.49 65.0 63.4 Thin --> is colour G or the thin gridle a problem? Thin is fine, so is G colour.
2.36 G VVS1 VG Exc VG 1.43 64.0 67.3 Thin to Slighty thick --> is colour G or the gridle a problem? As above.
2.42 E VS1 NO CUT INDICATED VG VG 1.51 59.0 68.9 Thick to very thick --> NO CUT indcated: how can I find out? If the diamond is online ask the seller for photos and an ASET image if available, if in a store then you will have to see if you like the diamond and get an independant appraiser check the diamond if you can find one skilled in judging cut. The main thing with EC's is if you like the diamond and have compared it to some others so you know the type you like best.

Is the thick to very thick gridle a problem?

Isn't desirable as this can waste weight and sometimes make the diamond look smaller than it should.
2.53 G VS1 NO CUT INDICATED G G 1.44 9.23*6.43*4.44 68.0 69.0 --> NO CUT and no GRIDLE indicated: how can I find out? Girdle, ask the seller, cut as above.
2.75 G VVS1 VG VG G 1.50 66.0 69.0 Medium to slightly thick --> is colour G a problem? Girdle is fine, as above with G colour, not a problem.

4. All stones have quite a high percentage of depth --> where is the border...? It depends, depth doesn't always relate to spread or face up size in fancy shapes, best to normally keep it in the low to mid 60% range with a smaller table.

Here is a chart you can use as a guide to help you but above all go with what you find beautiful. Don't discard a diamond if you love it if it doesn't quite match up with the numbers

Sorry I can''t help with the diamonds, but I have a comment on Michael Jay. I met with Michael while looking for a diamond for my ering. We didn''t end up purchasing from him, but he was very friendly and professional. At the time we were looking at EGL stones and he was honest in acknowledging EGL''s loose grading and sent pictures and specs as I requested from him. It was a pleasure dealing with him.

THANKS SO MUCH FOR YOUR HELP!

Can you recommend a vendor at 47th street? I would like to call and check if they can "organize" the diamonds I like (also based on your comments) and see what they have available and then stop by at the vendor to look at them and decide...

I would try Mark at www.engagementringsdirect.com or www.exceldiamonds.com ask for Judah or Barry. I would give them a call initially then they can get some selections to show you.

If you don't mind driving or taking the train to Long Island, try Jon at www.goodoldgold.com and make an appointment, Jon is great and might be able to show you some lovely EC's if you contact him.

Mark Turnowski''s on 47th and 5th.

THANKS SO MUCH FOR YOUR HELP!
