I am interested in getting the diamond from my wedding ring (divorced) reset into a ring for my daughter''s law school graduation. I bought the ring from Roger''s Jeweler''s 25 years ago, and I have their certification and insurance appraisal. I''m trying to determine if it would be best to just return to Roger''s and have her choose a new setting there and be done with it or if I might be better off finding, if possible, another setting and jeweler to do the work. I''m disabled and on a fixed income so money is a concern.

It''s a .5 carat marquise cut which she would like in white gold with 2 side stones - she''s thinking topaz.

I called Roger''s today and tried to get a ballpark figure out of them. He told me without the side stones, over $500; with the side stones, over $700. I must say, I was a little surprised at the price.

I understand that asking a jeweler to reset a diamond they didn''t sell you can be difficult. Even so, being such a fish out of water here, I need some advice.

Thanks so much.

well first off, to bring down the cost, I would get a stock setting that just need the head to be changed out according to your diamond. Once you find a setting that you'd like from a vendor, see if they will set it for you and what the diamond mounting fee is, and maybe check around to local jewelers as well and ask them the cost of mounting a diamond into your own setting. Insurance is recommended on your diamond just in case on the off chance that damage occurred during setting. but let me check around and see if I find any semi mounts that might work..

ETA : here is a link that many of us have purchase from this seller and you would just tell him or ask him first for the specific size head to fit in any of these mounts. then take this mount to a jeweler.

or how bout resetting it into a pendant with a delicate chain? that might be less costly and may keep you under $500
