Diamond recutting

Ok, Im really curious now that I have seen some members here get their diamonds recut!!!! I wouldnt have thought it feasible or possible.....to me it seemed something that was done in another `universe`!!! LOL

So, please help me understand how one goes about getting a diamond recut. Do all cutters have the same skills as each other? How would you know who to give your diamond to? Can it be done for someone like myself who is in Australia? If the diamond cracked, how do you know that it wasnt just kept by the cutter??? Will a cutter tell you if it is going to be too risky or not enough improvement? Do cutters have the same love of `diamond performance` and understand all the angles etc like some of our vendors here do. eg GOG and WHiteflash.

eg I wouldnt want to send my diamond into 8 star who would cut away too much for not any major performance difference due to their formula.

I would want someone who could analyse the angles and see where the maximum benefit can be derived for minumum loss of face up size. The weight doesnt bother me personally.

Sharon you have a princess right? If thats the case, I haven't heard of princess re-cuts, but I'm sure its possible.
As to your questions, there are very few people I would trust for a re cut.
I'm not sure if they offer the service, but Holloways is the only one I would even approach with in Australia.
But, if you are serious about this, it may be something you will need to deal with a US vendor, ie. Whiteflash.

Every stone is going to be different, as in whether its even its feasible, how much of an improvement can be made, whether it may impact the colour or clarity or the stone, and how much weight will be lost.
From what I understand, no reputable cutter will comment on any of this until they have inspected your stone in person and at length..

Do you have an RB you want done?

Ditto - contact Gary for suggestions and be guided by his advice. Je would be able to look at the angles etc and let you know how to cut it to get a nice cut overall and retain the most weight. And even if it's worth it or not. I wouldn't let anyone else here touch it, but that's just me

Just a note, I am sure that insurance here won't cover it for the recut, so you do it at your own risk. The cutter wouldn't cover the risk either I don't think, so unless it's a total dog and you can afford to drop the money to replace it in the unlikely even that it goes wrong, then I would think very carefully.

What kind of clarity is it? A more included stone would be more risky to cut I believe.

Just out of curiosity is it very expensive to recut a diamond? I have a very small .22 diamond in a necklace that is horrible, I have thought about having it recut so that it is sparklier, I know it may not be worth the price but I just would like to know if is would be really expensive, thanks

Hi Honey, its an Si2 with inclusions visible from the side but not the top. The cut is not great as the table is bigger than the depth . 74.3% table to 70.2% depth.

The risk sounds really scary!!!!

Re. going to Garry, I have been to his shop for resetting but didnt think to ask about recutting. I did mention that I thought ny diamond was not great, but the topic of recutting was not brought up. I will consider if I will mention it. If its doable, it would make a very interesting before and after!!!!!

Yes I have a princess, but also a round brilliant that could probably have a makeover!!!!!!

I agree about Holloways and Whiteflash/ GOG etc

I will be in America next year in LA, Hawaii and Orlando......would this help in terms of being closer to the American vendors?

Well, GOG is in NY, and WF is in Texas, so I don''t think you will be close to either...but you could always take a detour though

no, not worth it for a small stone. cutter charge XX dollar per ct with a minimum charge of 1 ct.

Hmmmmmm, Im actually thinking of a detour to NY while my family is in Orlando. !!!!

I would love a rough idea as to costs involved???? My princess is 4 carats.


Realistically, if my stone is not worth recutting for whatever reason.....I will just have to plan the next purchase and put this one down to lessons in life. Being big it does serve a purpose, and god knows that I did want to experience that feeling!!!!! But I also want extreem sparkle, which may have to come from an eternity band!!!!!!!!
