Hi

I''ve been looking at a diamond online with the following dimensions: 1.02 carat, Color F, Clarity IF, GIA Cut grade Excellent, Polish Excellent, Symmetry Excellent, Thin to Medicum Girdle, Table 57% and Depth 60.9%. I''ve been trying to get as close to perfect of a diamond for around $15000 and was excited when I found this. However, upon further research and coming across the HCA, I plugged the Crown angle (33.5) and the Pavillion angle (41.2) and saw that it only gets a rating of Very Good.

Any thoughts? I found another similar diamond with better Crown and Pavillion angles for about $1500 more.

Thanks!

Hi Alb!

When you say you want a 'perfect' diamond - do you mean that you are looking for a D colour, IF clarity diamond - or are there a range of colours & clarity grades you would consider?

What size would you like the diamond to be?

You could get a lot of diamond for $15,000 if you were looking at lower colour & clarity grades - but I guess you are aware of that.

Here's what we normally aim for in a diamond (thanks to Lorelei for this):

depth - 60 - 62.6% maximum ( as a suggested cut off so you don't limit stones slightly over 62%)
table - 54- 57%
crown angle - 34- 35 deg
pavilion angle - 40.6 - 41 deg

* with crown and pav angles on the shallower ends ( cr 34/ pav 40.6) and steeper ( cr 35/ pav 41) it may be good to check these proportions are complimentary with an Idealscope image, and or skilled vendor advice, to make sure they work in harmony for this particular stone.

girdle - thin to slightly thick, medium, avoid extremes such as very thick etc
polish and symmetry - very good and above.

However, it's the combinations of the angles that will determine a good score on the HCA - they have to work well together. If you aim to keep in the range above though, that's a great start!

*ETA* How about this
1.03ct E VVS1 H&A diamond for $13,715

Any particular reason you''re going for F/IF? You can drop the color a grade or two and bring clarity all the way down to SI, and you''d still have a stone that looks IDENTICAL to an F/IF to the naked eye. IF clarity carries such a high price premium for something you can''t see!

For example, this H/SI1 will face up just like an F/IF provided that it''s eye-clean, and it''s cut to the most exacting standards, for less than half of what you would pay for the F/IF!

Or if money''s not a big issue and you still want to spend $15k, why not go for something like this 1.5 ct G/SI1? STILL less than your 1 ct F/IF, and only one color grade lower, for a whopping .5ct more!

I would interpret your quest to keep within your budget and find a 1ct stone, IF clarity with the best cut possible. You are on the road to discovering the right diamond for you to buy and acting in a very methodical way. I think you need patience because you are doing the search properly.
