My future Mother in Law used to "dabble" in the jewelry business so I went to her when searching for a diamond for her daughter for an engagement ring. She recently went to a jewelry show and found what she considers a "great deal" I did not have the time to run down to look at the stone and the vendor would not allow her to take it so I had to make a decision...we pulled the trigger. I am told this is a GIA certified 1.75 Carat SI1 diamond. Based on my lack of knowledge and limited research, I'm reading mixed reviews of SI1 clarity diamonds. The diamond is a cushion cut and will be set in an 18 Karat gold ring with a halo with approximately another .75 Carats of diamonds. Is this a good cut/quality for an engagement ring? Thank you

Have you got a copy of the GIA report or the report number from it (we can look it up online with that number at www.gia.edu)?

There's nothiing fundamentally wrong with SI1, or any other grade for that matter. It's a rock. That's significantly bigger than average and even slightly above average on clarity so I think it's fair to say that it's suitable for an engagement ring. Whether or not there are other issues depends on the details. No problems so far.

Congratulations on your upcoming engagement.

Sorry this took so long but the GIA number is 5186804385, would like some opinions of those more educated than me about the quality of this diamond for an engagement ring, thanks!

It would be more helpful to post a pic of the actual diamond. I'm not sure if the store you got it from has a liberal return policy but ideally you'd want to assess it before mounting it in a ring. It does have a number of inculsions on the Clarity Characteristics but it might still be eye clean.
