FIRST POST ON ROCKY TALKY:
I have an opportunity to purchase a "pre-owned" engagement and band, set, with a GIA certed 1.09 round Brilliant GIA diamond, H Colour, SI-1 with an Excellent Cut and Symmetry, VG Polish -Thin to Med Girdle - no flores, and no culet. The manufacturer of the set is probably the industry's most well known, but I don't want to say the name. The HCA ranks the specs as .7 and triple Excellent with a VG Spread. I am looking at purchase price of about $6200. I think I can sell the plat setting and band for at least $500 (maybe more) and would also make another $300 through Points on the purchase. Final cost for the stone will be about $5500 after the deductions. I plan to have the stone set in a triology semi-mount that I already have. What do readers think of this stone and price ? There seem to be about 6 loose stones on the Pricescope diamond search that have similar specs and these range from $6600 to $8100. There is a 14 day return with this vendor, but is the "discount" and final price enough to warrant buying "pre-owned", having the sell the setting, dealing with possible problems, etc????

It sounds like an okay deal. I hope it isn't Tiffany, though. Because the ring is worth a lot more intact. How much you'll get for the setting is partly dependent on what the brand is.

I would be buying this for the stone, and selling the setting, but I know what you mean re: the setting being worth more intact for one of the big names. It's not a Tiffany, but a De Beer diamond and setting. Thanks so much for your opinion.

It sounds like a decent deal. Can you negotiate it down even more? Personally I'd tell the person I was buying from that THEY should sell the setting and offer them 5400 for the stone alone, so you don't have to deal with the hassle of selling the setting. And you'd get a bit more savings. You can get the stone unset at any respectable place with an in house bench for 25 bucks and you could do it together so you walk away with the stone, and they take the setting and band. If the band is platinum and a nice style with diamonds they can probably get over 600 for it, if it's plain metal closer to 300. And the setting would be another 250 or so (settings do not keep their value at all) if it's a plain solitaire.

Thanks
I think they were sticking around $5900 for just the stone. I am now feeling that for the little bit of savings, I would be better to pay the extra and order a new stone on-line. As I have just starting reading this site, I think my journey has just begun! Thanks for your comment - it's a help. Fanny
