Large diamond price drop this month, overall trend the last several months has been down.

Europe in a definite recession, slowdown in China, and US likely in or close to recession again. Don't believe the mainstream media and clown economists that the worst is behind us and central banks across the world can print our way out of this mess. They may be reinflating stocks, commodities, and real estate for the past couple of years; but they can't do it forever. Plan ahead.

In terms of diamond prices and consumers of diamonds, this is great news. Expect prices to continue to drop. If you're in the market for a diamond, wait. Next month may be an even better deal.

From the Diamond Price Chart post by Erika Winters:
Retail diamond prices decreased in June, reflecting sluggish Asian demand, a record-low Indian rupee, and US consumer demand for more affordable goods. Pricescope tracks retail diamond prices each month from a database of over 450,000 diamonds.

Retail Diamond Price Percentages for June 2012

0 to 0.5 carat: - 3%

0.5 to 1.0 carat: - 2%

1.0 to 2.0 carats: - 3%

2.0 to 3.0 carats: - 4%

3.0 to 4.0 carats: - 4%

4.0 to 99 carats: - 2%

oooh, time to get my 5 carat.... :Up_to_something: :naughty:
Now how to convince dh that food, expenses and mortgages are overrated. :cheeky:

Hi Joe,
If you're betting short on long term diamond prices, I'll take that bet.
Let's take a look at that chart again in September, when people are gearing up for the holiday season.

they are totally overrated. Diamonds are like the food of life - the original carbon source created back in the big bang theory (or whatever...) appeal to his technical/logical side - he'll see that your happiness is worth more than a silly mortgage.... :twirl: :loopy:

Perhaps I should have you speak to him, you are pretty convincing!! :appl:

No problem Missy- how long do you need:)

Seriously, chart or no chart, I don't see substantial any softening of wholesale prices of polished diamonds going on right now. Plus, I can tel you first hand the rough market is incredibly difficult ( expensive)

David is right.
Rough suppliers are trying to raise prices and finding very few buyers.
The rough market is totally out of sync with the polished market right now.
In my opinion diamond prices overshot the market and it will take a while to sort out.
Long term they will go up until the market changes and or supply opens up.
Honestly I think the industry is in for even more consolidation with some major cutting houses getting hosed and the industry getting even more vertical as they get bought out/close shop.

I have been saying that those that were counting on new markets to off set declining sales in the US and Europe were dreaming. Well it is too early to say I'm 100% right but it is shaping up that way so far.

I noticed polished diamond prices had dropped a couple days ago too and was wondering whether there would be a post about it. My husband tells me diamonds are non fungibles...

But when I see a drop in price on line, saying 'look baby 2 months ago this was 1k more' etc...it's exciting for me and he smiles :)

Christina, I think we should let Enerchi work her magic on the both of them together 8-) ... we have lots of wine so should be easy peasy for her! :cheeky:

The central A/C motor (from just 2007- how long do these things last anyway!) we have here blew (I smelled the smoke but my dh smelled nothing- luckily the temp increasing was an important clue LOL) just yesterday afternoon (while I was posting here the a/c guy was here replacing the motor). Thank goodness the a/c technician was able to go and purchase a new motor (he didn't have the right motor in his truck unfortunately) the afternoon before a holiday where every store is closed and install it and it's working now yay! But oh man, that $$$ (new a/c motor not covered by our warranty of course!) we spent on that could have bought me a sweet gemstone BTY necklace. ;( Life expenses keeps getting in the way of my jewelry dreams!!!

I would welcome a price decrease as I think they went up too fast and too steeply in too short of time. I think it needs another 10-12% to go. Their reason was that China and India were buying and they didn't care if they US quit buying. But if now they are pulling back on purchasing, it is better for us in the US. I think they call it in the stock market world a healthy pullback. :appl:

Diamond Price Drop Continues...

Retail Diamond Price Percentages for July 2012

0 to 0.5 carat: -3%
0.5 to 3.0 carats: -2%
3.0 to 4.0 carats: -1%
4.0 to 99 carats:-3%

https://www.pricescope.com/diamond-prices/diamond-prices-chart

Wait and save!

Are these changes, and the ones in your OP, over a one month period or compared to what they were 1 year ago?

The term "Retail price percentages" in itself is totally ambiguous.
That could mean retail prices overall which will be greatly influenced by large retail outlets.
The point is, it might not be indicative of overall diamond prices.
Even then overall prices do not reflect individual segments that may be moving differently than the market overall.

But based on reports I hear, it is a softer market than it was a month back

Hi Kenny,

The chart is the % retail price change since 12/03/2007. For example, the 0 - 0.5 carat range was +4% from the 12/03/2007 in June '12, now it is only +1% from the 12/03/2007 value; which is a -3% price decrease.

David,

The source of the data according to Pricescope: "The source is real live market data as the prices of most of these diamonds are set by Business to Business listings with vendors typically adding 10% or less to the wholesale price. There are more than a dozen different vendors listing over 450,000 diamonds on Pricescope."

Joe, when we look at any database driven list of diamonds, there's certain aspects that make this type of comparison less valid
1) In many cases multiple vendors list a given diamond, and at different prices
2) even disregarding that- if we look at a given size weight combo- say 1.02 G/VS2 RBC- where we'll find a large amount of stones. The variance in price from the least to most costly is HUGE. That's due to differing values of stones with the same grade. The reasons are pretty much what this entire forum is about.

So there may be a relation to overall market conditions- however the PS list can't be used as an accurate gauge of the entire industry- or diamond prices as a whole.

 Happy to help 2 desperate PSers in need!!! I'll see what I can do to convince your DH's that this is a FAR better use of finances for all concerned especially if they are SAVING as they are spending!! That sounds like perfect "man-logic" to me :naughty:
