WTB Diamond or similar Studs and Earring Necessities/Basics for a Newly Pierced Gal

Hi, I lurk more than I post (as you can tell). I got my ears pierced earlier this month for the first time in my 58 years of life. So I thought I'd treat myself to some earrings. I have been looking at diamonds, but don't have the budget to get the really nice ones, so I'm am fine with other diamond type stones. I prefer gold since I'm afraid of reacting to silver over time. I need to have screw backs or something other than friction posts on larger studs since I have long hair that seems to want to yank out my current earrings. If you have any to sell, could you let me know? And if there are any must haves in the earring world, I would need to have a pair of them too, so please post or give me suggestions on what you love, and designs you seek out. Designs that are easy to use and don't yank out or get lost would be good to know too. Thank you!

Wow, you have waited a long time to have your ears pierced! What made you decide to go ahead now?

I’ve had mine pierced since I was 16 and I have worn many, many different styles over the years. The pair I’ve worn the most by far are my diamond studs so to me they were worth the price. I should say that mine are tiny by comparison to many owned on here, only 0.33ct total. They are very sparkly so have plenty of presence for daily wear. My other “go to’ pairs are my freshwater pearl studs (look at Pearl Paradise for an idea of sizes, colours, qualities and prices), small solid gold hoops and tiny blue sapphire studs. I have some very small earring jackets to dress the stones up too. Have fun looking!

Thank you! I wasn't allowed to get my ears pierced when I was younger, and never had the urge to do so after high school. When my daughter turned 18, I thought I'd get them pierced with her, but she did it with friends, so that too, passed. When she was home visiting earlier this month, we did it on a whim. She wears DY and Kendra Scott earrings and I am afraid those are too heavy for this newbie. I do want a nice pair of diamond studs though and have been looking at 1 carat (.5 on each side) for daily use. I don't think I'll take them off at night either, so comfort is important.

Costco has some really nice earrings! I took a peak online in their gold section and they gold love knot or heart studs for about $90. And really cute heart dangles too! I have lots of costco jewelry and love their gold. I'm excited for you to get your ears pierced. You're going to have so much fun picking out and wearing your earrings! Cant wait to hear more!

That's a great idea! I'll have to check them out. It's so weird how much prettier I think my ears look with earrings!

I’m a long hair type too, and I find that my current studs catch all the time, whether my hair is pinned up or not. Previous to my studs, I had worn french drop earrings known as Dormeuses (sleepers). They have a lever back which lets the earring hang free and yet are very secure and don’t catch on hair. I miss them, let me tell you!


Since you might want to try different types and sizes before committing to anything, maybe take a trip to tj maxx or another department store jobbie and play with all kinds. When you move your head side to side, you’ll learn what you like. (Personally I cant wear danglies but I didn’t know that til I tried them.)

I have a pair of studs that I have the certificate numbers, but I cannot find the paper certificates. They are both J color, .45 and .47 in white gold, both score under 2 on the HCA.

I don't wear them much at all. I don't know the budget you have in mind.

I wanted a more secure back for my diamond studs but I don't like screw backs, which can also unscrew and can catch hair. My jeweler suggested these EarringLock post/back, and I went with them:

This post and back are a set; you can't use the back without the matching post.

To put the earring back on or to remove it, you sqeeze it, which makes the little plates overlap and the holes line up.

They are very secure and comfortable. Just an idea, in case you don't buy pre-owned studs (or decide to modify pre-owned).

What neat backings! Marriedbuteloped, I'm a semi regular on PG and a lot of the ladies swear by those bigger backings.

PearlsandGems, I've never seen that backing before. Very cool. I first thought it was the backing that Tiffany uses. My friend showed me the backings on her earrings and you have to pinch the backing or it won't move because it is locked in, sort of like your backings. I didn't think that the screw backings would come off, but it makes sense.

PreRaphaelite, I'll have to look up your backings. They sound nice. I've also considered leverbacks. They look secure and I think I'd love a little dangle!

There are other brands of locking earring backs. Probably the one I've heard most often is Protektor. I tried that one at the jeweler but found it uncomfortable to pinch...it hurt my finger and tended to flip over when I pinched it. I believe that one has to be paired with a special post.

I also have some LuxLock earring backs that I got from Rio Grande-- they work very well on most of my studs, but not on the ones with a heavy duty post, which is too thick to fit into the LuxLock. Rio carries an assortment of this type.

There are others too, that I haven't tried-- Lox, for example, also at Rio, Etsy and elsewhere. Supposed to work with any post.
