Hi all!

I''m new to Pricescope, but I''ve been lurking for awhile. My boyfriend proposed back in July while we were in Hawaii. I have been wearing the ring for 3 months now and the diamond is spinning in the setting. I took it into a local jeweler to have it looked at and he told me the stone was secure, but he would try to tighten the prongs anyway. He said the stone should have been set in a six prong setting because it''s too big to be in a four prong. (I don''t think that''s true because there are a lot of pricescopers with much bigger diamonds in four prong settings) He tightened the prongs, but all it did was scratch the platinum. The diamond is still moving and rattling when I shake it. Does anyone have any ideas?

Find a better jeweler? What he said is just not making sense.

It sounds like the jeweler may have been simply offering his opinion when he said "it''s too big to be in a 4-prong setting"; after all, he did acknowledge the diamond was secure.

It''s hard to say as you didn''t mention the size of your stone, etc., but as a general matter, rings (and most jewelry, for that matter) are like any other durable goods. They require maintenance from time to time to keep them in top shape. It''s a good idea to get the prongs checked every six months. From time to time, prongs will become loose from getting knocked or snagged on things, and that''s not uncommon. Having the prongs checked twice a year and corrected as needed will help prevent loss.

+1!

A diamond becoming loose in its setting happens most of the time but it certainly should have not happened when you have only been wearing your ring for a few months.

Take it to another jeweler to have it looked at - check the prong seats and make sure that the stone is sitting securely.

Good luck!

Can you have the jeweler that you purchased from give you another opinion? I have a 4 prong setting. How big is your diamond?

Maybe he meant it is too big for the head?

It could be that the diamond was set into a head that was not a perfect fit for it.

there are many LARGE stones out there set in 4 prongs--that is just not true

Thanks for all your responses! I''ve been in Europe and just got home today. I''m going to have another jeweler look at the ring and see what they say. My fiance bought the ring online and it was shipped from Philadelphia, so I don''t want to part with it unless I absolutely have to.

Good plan. Either that jeweler just doesn''t know what he''s talking about or it is possible that the original jeweler set it into the wrong size head as someone mentioned...good luck!

dude sounds like a shmuck! good idea with checking out another rock doctor.
