My diamond has a chip on the top on one of the sides. It is round brilliant cut set up high on four prongs a little over 1ct. I don''t really understand how it chipped because I am very careful with it. It does have some inclusions and I was wondering if the inclusion has weakened it. I noticed a line leading into where the chip was. I got it inspected a month ago and it was in perfect condition. I am very upset! What should I do. The place I bought it form insures them for full refund on the stone if it is an imperfection in something they did and "normal" wear. I am not sure if it covers this.

I''m sorry to hear about the damage on your diamond. It appears from the wording that the vendor who you bought it from does not cover such damage. Do you have your own separate insurance that covers loss and damage? Having a diamond set up high increases the risk of getting chipped no matter how careful one is. Sometimes, just a slight bump in the right direction can damage the diamond. There have been many sad stories posted here about diamonds being chipped with the wearer having no idea how they did it.

Yes, sometimes it doesn''t take much for a diamond to chip unfortunately. What clarity is the diamond out of interest? I think your best bet might be to take the stone to an independant appraiser to find out exactly what you are dealing with, here is a tool which will help you find one in your area.

Hopefully you have the ring insured under your homeowners / renters insurance policy. In my experience, most in-store "policies" are not worth the paper that they are written on, hopefully this is not the case here. If you truly want to determine whether the chip is related to the original structure of the diamond, I recommend taking the diamond to an independent gemologist for evaluation, a gemologist can evaluate a diamond from a forensic standpoint to determine whether the damage is related to any of the inclusions which were part of the diamond when you purchased it. Hopefully you have a copy of a lab report and/or clarity photographs which will enable to gemologist to establish a base line for the structure of the diamond prior to damage. If the item is insured with your homeowners or renters insurance company, it is a lot less hassle just to file a claim and get the diamond replaced...
