Hi,

I need the forum''s advice and help on this diamond:
Round Brilliant
Measurements: 7.00 - 7.05 x 4.32 mm

Carat Weight: 1.30 carat
Color Grade: D
Clarity Grade: VS1
Cut Grade: Excellent
Proportions:
Depth: 61.5%
Table: 56%
Crown Angle: 33.5°
Crown Height: 14.5%
Pavilion Angle: 40.8°
Pavilion Depth: 43.0%
Star length: 50%
Lower Half: 80%
Girdle: Medium to Slightly Thick, Faceted (4.0%)
Culet: None
Finish:
Polish: Excellent
Symmetry: Excellent
Fluorescence: None
Comments: Pinpoints are not shown.

The store can''t provide the ASET image. =( But based on the HCA, it seems to be a great diamond.

The GIA report is also dated from September 2007. Should this be a concern?
I asked if they could get a newer GIA report. But they wanted me to pay for it if the diamond needs to be graded again.
I also asked why they can''t sell the diamond from 2007. They told me they kept it for the value to go up. I don''t know if that is believeable.

I would appreciate the forum''s help!

Hi d&c how are you?

The diamond looks promising, the report date should not be of concern as in the scheme of things it isn''t old. I take it you have seen it in person?

NUmbers look good.

It would be prudent to ask if the diamond was previously sold and has come back, via trade-up program for example. It doesn't sound like it, but best to be sure. A diamond that has had any wear should have polish & clarity verified as still-matching the grading report.

Hi,
I have seen the diamond in person. But I''m not confident of my ability to see if it''s really as good as the numbers say they are.
=(

See if you can view some well cut stones in person, for example if there is a Jareds near you check out their Peerless AGS0 cut grade or alternatively, Hearts on Fire if there is a dealer closeby. This will give you a good base of comparison to see how this one looks.

You could also buy an Idealscope which would be helpful.

Thanks John,
I did ask the question....
They told me they bought it and kept the diamond for a future sale (which happens to be now) for investment purposes. They told me they kept it for a couple of years so the price would go up and they would sell it.
I don''t believe the store has a trade in program...or at least not that I know of.

Unfortunately, I can''t tell if the polish is as good as the GIA report says it is (excellent).

If the diamond is this good, it just concerns me that how no one has any interest in buying it since 2007. Even if they took the diamond out on the market for sale 6 months ago, I''m sure someone would have noticed this is a good diamond based on the specs.

Get it independently appraised then to make sure there is no wear on the diamond. Make the sale contingent on a ok from an independent appraiser that everything matches the report, or you can even send it to GIA to verify the stone is what it is said to be.

If the diamond was worn a slight chip, scratch, etc might not even something you would see. But it would be worth noting if the diamond is in different shape now than when it was graded.

It is not unheard-of for diamonds to stay in stores for years. You''re correct though, by the stats and numbers this is a pretty nice stone. The "investment" explanation is uncommon but that doesn''t mean they''re being deceptive. You could ask if they mind giving you a return period during which you could take it to an independent appraiser. A simple verification by a good appraiser shouldn''t be too costly; the bit of extra relative to what you''re spending may be worth your peace of mind. It is also a good sign if the jeweler has no hesitation in allowing this - it speaks to his confidence in his product.

I agree with John- many stones can stay in stock for a few years- this is not uncommon, nor a cause for concern.

Lack of ASET, in itself, does not indicate a problem for many buyers- it''s fairly rare to find a store that has ASET images. However if you really do want them, this seller might not be a good fit. As well for a trade up program, which is important to some buyers, - but not to others

I was a little more concerned about stories of "investment".
In a sense, of course that''s true- a store "invests" in inventory to sell. Calling this "investment purposes" sounds disingenuous- as if they are inviting you to buy for an investment.
What if the price had fallen?( it did if we compare to 18 months ago)
This might be no problem at all, I''m just sensitive to "sales lines" if they are not reality based.

My 1.58 RB has a 2007 certificate as well. I have had it independently appraised and the diamond checked out wonderfully. I would say there is probably little to be concerned about, but just in case--get it appraised. Good Luck!
