I am looking to buy a 1.26 ct round cut GIA certified stone that is I in color and Si1. The jeweler says its an ideal cut with these cut specs. I am paying about $5700. Good deal?

Measurements: 6.86-6.83-4.26
Depth P: 62.2 %
Table : 59 %
Polish: Good
Sym: Excellent
Flu None (Inert)

Crown 35%
pavillion 40.8%
Cutlet 0

I haven't looked up other prices but my first thoughts are that the dealer is full of **** because it has good polish. First, ideal is a term used by AGS where there is no room for any error at all, second, a GIA excellent cut requires a minimum of "very good." Which means that he is trying to seperate different aspects of the cut and say that a few are ideal--using terminology very loosely and probably knowing that it sounds good and you won't understand. Thus at this point he would have lost my trust and I would probably just move on to a more competent trustworthy jeweler. But I can be pretty hard when there are so many great options out there.

Also, if anybody is RUSHING you to make a purchase, forget about it. Move on. Lots of wonderful diamonds at good prices, if you are pressured most likely the best you will get is a good deal and the worst a decision you regret for the rest of your life. So again, if there is pressure, walk.

Two big marks against this person means to me...again...walk.

Also, I have made it my personal crusade to recommend her whenever possible

because I was in love with her service. But Jennifer down at James Allen is the least pressure most factual based rep I have ever worked with in any purchase. Even after 100 questions on a 2k purchase and 10 specific request she still sent me the loose diamond and recommended that I take a look at it and decide if it is the one I really want. Incredible.

Well....it scores a 2.2 on the HCA, which isn''t horrible, but isn''t great either. It''s certainly not a super ideal stone, but would probably be pretty. I personally would pass...but that''s just me.

You aren''t getting ripped off on the price (assuming it doesn''t have a bad inclusion for some unknown reason etc.). If you see the stone tomorrow and it satisfies you, and you''ve seen lots of diamonds in comparison, I think you''ll be fine.

Perhaps the dealer meant that the diamond is ideal for you? It''s clearly not "ideal" since GIA does not use that term an the polish is just good. So this is what I would do:

1. Look at the diamond with a loupe to make sure the inclusions are ones you can live with, if you''re not good with a loupe, ask the jeweler to point em out.
2. Look at the diamond in natural light, tilt it back and forth. If it performs well enough for you, than the "good" polish
3. Look at the diamond through the sides to make sure you are OK with the color.

Good luck!

Here we go I plugged the numbers you have into the GIA Facetware cut estimator, using their standard numbers for the parameters you didn''t have like lgf etc.

Anyway the result showed a cut grade of only ''Very Good'' not ''Excellent'' As WHFSR pointed out Ideal is a very loose term. You can play with this tool at GIA Facetware

I think you can do better...

Try to stick with a table size of 54-57 and at least very good for both polish and symmetry. The jeweler was using the word "ideal" a little loosely.

You could get an AGS Ideal for the same price. But, it doesn't really matter if it's a pretty stone.

Yep, if you have seen it and love it, that is the main thing. The dealer is using the term Ideal Cut as many do probably, to describe their better cut diamonds - this does not mean it is a true Ideal or Superideal, this looks to be a nice make of diamond which many wear for years with pleasure! Let us know how you get on!
